Problem: I keep losing my internet connection. It's a case of it being a hit or miss whether I'll connect and for how long because sometimes it's very short and like now it is allowing me to be on for a while. What's causing it? I'm using NTL broadband cable modem via USB cable. I tried an ethernet cable but that did not work either.

Not an answer to your problem, but you really should be using the Ethernet cable for your NTL broadband modem. They recommend that you do.

Thank you for your reply Fusion. The thing is I did try that but it showed up as 'unplugged'. I don't know why because both ends of the cables were connected up fine.

Take a look here first about how to change from usb to ethernet.
If the connection still keeps going down, consider using a winsock repair tool like this to see if it helps. Remember to backup your registry first with it before going ahead. I had problems with losing the connection and this little program seems to have sorted it out. Good luck.

On the NTL modem you should see 4 lights, PWR, ENET, SYNC and RDY. When you are connected to the net but not actually doing any surfing those 4 lights should remain steady. The ENET light may blink from time to time. What do your lights show?

Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

The lights show up correctly, (I should know I've been through it enough times with the NTL 'help' line) and I'm using a USB cable at the moment as the ethernet shows up as 'unplugged'.
UPDATE: Just got a new modem from Virgin Media; going to hook it up to see if it works.
But miraculously the internet connection has been behaving itself for the last two days so it seems I may not need it - we'll see.

Latest Update: The original usb connections continued to behave but because I got it I decided to hook up the new ethernet modem and so far everything is working even if I sometimes have to reboot the system to get it to work.
