I am purchasing a New Laptop with WiFi and want to Connect to NTL Broadband. My home computer at the moment is connected to a modem supplied by NTL (as was having problems with connection via set top box) When it was installed they split the cable coming into the house and branched it into the set top box and then into the modem. The cable from the modem then runs upstairs to the small bedroom that we use for the computer. The lead is plugged into the wall socket they fitted and goes into an oblong black box (with flashing light) and then into one of the USB2 sockets on the computer, and thats it. Please can someone help with what I require to leave the upstairs computer as it is but to run the new laptop wire free. Would I have to put ISP details into the new laptop? I am quite good with electricals but sometimes the computer tech gets beyond me.

The first thing you need is Wireless Router for use with a cable system, something like this. That connects to your NTL modem with an ethernet cable and your desktop PC connects to it, also using an ethernet cable. You setup the router via your PC following the instructions supplied. When it's up and running and you've installed all the relevant router security you can connect your laptop to the router, again using a cable. Once you've connected to the net via ethernet and setup security on the laptop you can remove the wire and continue with a wireless connection.

You say Ethernet connection to my computer. So it is a different connection than the one I have now as the wiring from the modem is connected via a USB2 connection?

The NTL modem has two sockets, USB and Ethernet. NTL (now VirginMedia) recommend that you do not use USB as it's slower and prone to poor connections. Your PC should have a NIC (Network Interface Card) already installed and you should use that for your connection using an ethernet cable.
