Connecting a wireless/non-wireless home network
      #367097 - Tue Oct 02 2007 05:50 PM

Having struggled for ages, i have now got my internet wireless connection working, hurrah! HOWEVER is there anyway to connect my system up as outlined below?
1) Broadband internet comes into loft, goes via a cable into my linksys wireless system. From that it connects via cable directly to PC running XP, and wirelessly to downstairs laptop running Vista.
2) both connect to internet.(which i sorted out on my own!!)
3) can I connect both computers to each other to create a home network?
4) How do i do this? please help, annoyed and frustrated, Many thanks in anticipation.

Firstly, set up a workgroup by right-clicking My Computer > Properties > Computer Name and change the default workgroup name to something a bit more meaningful, also make the computer name recognisable, e.g. MainPC or IBMPC. The computer should reboot. Now identify the folders/files you want to share and right-click them and select share and whether you want read or write access. A little hand should appear under those that are shared.

Note that Vista is slightly different, have a look here http://www.microsoft.com/technet/network/evaluate/vista_fp.mspx Win XP Pro is also different, here http://www.practicallynetworked.com/sharing/xp_filesharing/08clientconnect.htm

Repeat this on other PCs, use the same workgroup name but, of course, a different computer name.

To see/copy files, go to Start > My Network Places (Network in Vista) and the computers/folders/files should appear. In Explorer drag them from one PC to the other.
