Vista Update problems
      #366900 - Sun Sep 30 2007 06:32 PM

I have been asked to try and sort an Update problem out.
On clicking the Windows Update via IE7's Tools tab I have a window telling me that there is 12 important updates totalling 34MB's.

When I click the Install tab, I'm getting a 80240016 Error code and it's telling me that Windows Update is currently installing other updates. Please try agaiin a few minutes.
I can wait hours and nothing happens. On restarting I'm warned that 1 of 1 update is being installed and not to prematurely turn off the machine.

On the actual restart, the exact problem is happening.

I have tried installing each update on it's own, but to no avail.

Research shows this is a common problem and there doesn't seem to be a definitive answer that works.

Has anyone else come up against this and have you solved it? It would seem that it has't been able to download and install updates since August.

Many thanks for any help.

One of these two should work :

1. You need to run the system file checker.
It has to be run from an elevated Command Prompt. Click Start > All Programs > Accessories and right-click Command Prompt, then ‘Run as Administrator’. Type sfc /scannow (note the space) and press Enter. This may take some time and you may have to put the Vista DVD in the drive. Try to download the updates again.

2. You need to stop the WU service, rename the SoftwareDistribution folder and restart the WU service.
Make sure you are logged on as an Administrator and go to Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools. Double-click Services (Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so) and right-click the Windows Update service then click Stop.

Start, type %windir% in the Start Search box and then press Enter. Locate and rename the SoftwareDistribution folder. This will erase your history on the Windows Update Site, which isn’t hugely important.

Start > Control Panel > Administrative Tools. Double-click Services (Provide the Administrator password or confirmation if prompted to do so) and right-click the Windows Update service then click Start. Try to download the updates again.

There is a third possibility, system restore, but for most people this has been going on for so long that the restore points were overwritten long ago.

Thanks for the reply Burr, I was hoping you'd help.

However, the first choice didn't work. It tells "Verification 98% complete. Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them".

Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.LOG.

I get denied access when I try to view the 38MB file.

The second choice was more hopeful. The downloaded Updates history had reset and indeed tells me to 'Check for Updates on your computer. When I click the update tab it tells me 'Install new Windows Update software'.
On clicking the update tab I now get a 'Windows could not search for new updates' with an error code: 8007000B.
The Try again tab loops the process again.

Many thanks for giving your time on this issue.

The 8007000b error is addressed here http://support.microsoft.com/kb/939399/en-us

Don't be surprised if it doesn't work as you have some corruption, as found by sfc.

If the machine is fairly new with very little loaded on it, it may be quicker to repair the installation.

Good luck.

Edit: It has occurred to me that you may correct the sfc corruption by running 'chkdsk /f /r' in a elevated command prompt then try the 'sfc /scannow' command.

Thanks BurrWalnut for your prompt reply.

Unfortunately the problem persists after trying all of your suggestions. I did in fact try the fsutil resource setautoreset true c:\ option before I posted on here.

I ran the chkdisk /f /r without an obvious problem, then the sfc /scannow which still shows the 98% with corrupt files found . . . etc. Needless to say the Updating issue is still there.

I'd be grateful if you could guide me through the repair procedure. The machine is an Acer Aspire (Vista Home Premium) and have been given 2 DVD's which if I remember rightly, when you first set the Acer's up from new, asks you if you want to create your recovery discs. I presume this is what they are with looking. They are not official ACER DVD's.

I hope we can repair without going down the reformat route and losing data as it is someone else's machine.

Many thanks for your patience.

Fusion

Vista can be repaired with either the DVD or on a preloaded operating system. Have a look at John Barnett’s site here http://vistasupport.mvps.org/windows_vista_repair_options.htm

I have this morning gone down the route of the Startup Repair option via F8 and advanced options.
As my issue isn't a Startup one it returns a 'No problems' were found.
The System Restore via the advanced options doesn't go back far enough in time to when the Updates started to fail.
I have just tried the Windows complete PC restore and the DVD's supplied aren't recognised as a backup!
On exploring the discs, they do indeed hold the ACER recovery information.

I have tried inserting the 1st DVD on Startup, but it ignores it and starts up normally.
Surely modern Systems, especially with no floppy drives are designed to check the DVD drive first.

Make sure the BIOS is selecting an optical drive as the first boot device.

Thanks for getting back

I changed the BIOS to first check the DVD drive and bingo it started to load the RAMDISK image.

However after selecting language it only offers me an option to "Restore to factory default". In effect destroying all the data on the drive.

Is there not a way to just re-install Vista without losing data? Or is this type of budget setup where you have to do your own back on first setup the bug barer?

Thanks again.

Using explorer, check the contents of both DVDs. There should be folders such as: boot, efi and sources which is very large.

The normal sequence when booting from the DVD is loading files, select language and keyboard and then bottom left is repair, which you should be able to choose.

I don't know much about the way the PC manufacturers set up their recovery options. Sometimes it's a partition, sometimes the user creates DVDs, sometimes full DVDs are supplied. The Acer site will probably give you the information you want.

Note: I should have said that a Vista repair is not the same as an XP repair. Presumably all the personal data is backed up.

When using the DVD backups method by Booting from the DVD's to try and repair the system, it only offers me a factory restore.

On reading some of the installed help files, I have used the Alt+F10 keys to bring up an Acer eRecovery Management window which gives me 3 options.
Restore system to factory defaults, Restore system from CD/DVD and Reinstall applications and drivers.

The 1st and 3rd options are not required and the 2nd Restore system from CD/DVD will "Recover from CD/DVD. All data will be destroyed! Please insert backup disk 1 to continue".

The HDD is partitioned using C & D. so I will drag all important files to the D partition (subject to the owners approval) and try this option.
It should restore the backup which was originally created on first use. Not far off a factory reset but allows me to save files etc.

I'll backup all the files on an external drive as further insurance.

Thanks again and will keep you updated.

Well done!

A reinstall is probably best as some corruption was identified by the system file checker, which may/may not have something to do with the windows updates.

Hi BurrWalnut

Just to let you know all is well at this end.
Restored System back to original DVD backup.

Importantly, the Windows Update is working fine now and all '45MB' of downloads installed without a hitch. Time will tell if future Updates are installed OK.

Thanks again for your invaluable help. Your knowledge of Operating Systems, in particular the Vista family is a God send to us that are used to 'dated' ones.

I personally use XP Pro I, but the future beckons and will try the new Vienna OS when it's rolled out in the near future. I'm sure myself and others will pick your brains in the future.

Cheers.
