Please, please, can someone help? The "Wireless network interface" on my laptop is disabled and I can't find out how to enable it again. I didn't do anything to it, it just went like it. In the meantime I have installed a USB WNA and now the whole machine is going so slowly I can't believe it and I have had to borrow my Mum's. What is happening? It must be something simple!
SOS!

Go to Control Panel > Network Connections > Right click the wireless icon > Enable

I have removed the software which drove the USB WNA as this seemed to be causing more problems. I have an icon at the bottom right hand side of the screen which indicates that the Wireless Network interface is disabled but it won't let me enable it. When I try and enable it using the instructions given by "Fusion", i.e via the Control Panel > Network Connections, right clicking on the Wireless Network Connection, it gives me the option of disabling it, so it must be enabled.
Also on startup I have the message "During installation you chose not to use Mirosoft Wireless Configuration Manager to control your Atheros Wirelss Network Card. However it is currently enabled for this card. Do you want to disable it?"
I have said no because I don't know what to do.
When I try to troubleshoot the WNA I get this message "Some of the controls on this property sheet are disabled because one or more Network property sheets are already open. To use these controls, close all these property sheets and then reopen this one."
When I do a test on the WNA using the Client Utility, it says the Radio test has failed and the Radio is not on.
What is all that about and what can I do about it?

Installing the USB WNA would in most cases turn off the 'The Wireless Zero Configuration Properties' which provide automatic configuration for your wireless 802.11 adapters.
Although you say you have uninstalled the USB WNA software, the Wireless Zero may not be set back to automatic.
Go to Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Services > Srcoll down to Wireless Configuration > Highlight/Double click > Startup Type should be Automatic > Service Status should be Started.
Hope that helps.

Thanks everso for your two replies. I did check the Wireless Zero Configuration, it is all as you said it should be. Do you think there is actually something wrong with it?

Could you go over exactly what you mean by "Wireless network interface on my laptop is disabled".
Does the wireless icon in the System Tray have a red cross next to it?

Yes, it does. If I right click on it it gives the option to repair but this doesn't work.
There is another icon which says "Wireless network interface disabled" when you put the mouse over it. I think that is the icon for the Atheros Client Utility. It has the option of "Enable Radio" but it is in grey and I can't select it.

When you double click the wireless icon, what happens? Does it open a window asking to choose a Wireless Connection? If so is it telling you "No wireless networks found in range" ?

I have to ask . . . . if you have a switch or 'FN key' on the keyboard, is it turned on or activated?

I am afraid I wouldn't know what key that is or if I have one.

Some laptops have an actual switch to turn the wireless facility on or off. Some use a key known as a Function key or Fn key.
What make and model laptop do you have?

To switch the wireless on/off use the button 3rd right of the power button.
or
Try pressing the Fn + F4 keys. There should be on screen information telling you if it's on or off.
The Fn key will have Fn in a different colour, maybe purple or blue.

The button was on but turning it off and on again results in a change - the Atheros WNA no longer has a line through it, the bars are there, but not green, although a few minutes ago I did get them green, not sure how. The icon with the tiny computer screen still has a cross by it. When I try to "repair" it, Windows tries to Disable the WNA but just gets stuck.
The whole machine is going very slowly and keeps freezing.

Hi Heather
You say green bars, something like this . . >
This tells you your signal is not exactly weak, but it could be a lot better. Has anyone moved the router from it's original position recently?
When you D/click the icon, what happens?

Actually all the bars are green now. When I double click them, It says
Active Profile : Default Auto Profile Selection : Disabled Connection Status : Associated Link Quality : Excellent
It has the correct SSID name, Access Point name : Unavailable Access Point IP Address : Unavailable Currrent Receive Rate: 11.0 Mps Current Transmit Rate : 2.0 Mps Client Adapter IP Addres : 0.0.0.0

Yes, all the bars are green, but the Wireless Icon still has a cross next to it.
At times it has tried to "acquire network address" but has failed.
The Router has not been moved and the network is fine for other machines such as my Mum's which is currently next to mine on the table.

I'm at a loss what to suggest other than: Try your laptop in a different room. Possibly go into the Routers settings via the browser and change what channel it is broadcasting on.
It's worth a try.

I have a few questions.
The situation now is that when I power up the laptop the WNA is disabled but if I press Fn and F4 twice, it enables it and eventually comes up saying it is connected to the network.
I can run Outlook Express and get emails. However, Internet Explorer will not load properly - it will either not load at all or load the home page and then freeze. (So I haven't been able to change the settings as you suggest above.)
Is there any reason why I cannot close down the machine properly? All I can do is disconnect the battery every time.
Also, When I power up I am still getting the message "During installation you chose not to use Mirosoft Wireless Configuration Manager to control your Atheros Wirelss Network Card. However it is currently enabled for this card. Do you want to disable it?" What does that mean? Is it a problem? What should I do about it?
