Are these new clips or existing, what are the file types that you are looking to play, as it may be a codec issue.
Alternatively to play any video file there is VLC player

they are existing videos. I click on web help but it isn't very helpful. It says about sound settings but it isn't very helpful and i don't understand all the technical jargon!
They are videos files that i have had on my computer for a long time and suddenly they just won't play!
It comes up with this message:
Windows Media Player cannot play the file. The Player might not support the file type or might not support the codec that was used to compress the file.

UPDATE:
I have a few video files which are called ASF's which still seem to be playing ok with WMP. But the mpeg files have stopped working. What are codecs anyway? I don't know much about these types of things.
When i get the error message come up, i clicked on web help, but it wasn't much help, they suggested i see if there any updates but this didn't solve anything.

If you're worried about jargon, then all you need to do is post it all here, we'll read it for you and explain the jargon, even post the referral link if you have to.
A codec is a device or program capable of performing encoding and decoding on a digital data stream or signal (in your case your video files on your PC)
Download and install this codec, it should solve your problem.

Why did you download all 6 infact what made you think that you had to? If you read the site it will have told you that you only needed to download one, from any of the mirrors.
Have you installed the codec?

I think i better give up thanks. I tried it again and it siad i had to restart the computer but when i did, it said the computer couldn't start up and i had to restore factory settings and all data would be lost. I didn't think i was going to get it started again but thankfully it did. Best let my other half sort it out.
