i've had my vista basic pc for 3 months now and when i try system restore it never works.
it's been lucky i haven't needed it for anything urgent.
whats up with it ?

I think you need to explain a little more than "it never works".

when i want to go back back a day or 2 i click the day i want,the computer restarts then a box comes up saying 'system restore wasn't sucessful)

Have you tried running it from the Vista DVD?
If not, boot from the DVD, select language, etc. click Repair, select the OS to repair and then choose System Restore.

vista came built into my computer so no disc.thanks for the help anyhow
