broadband connection

I am running XP home edition and orange broadband.until recently,to open my connection I had to click on the desktop icon.A couple of weeks ago,the connection window started appearing without being asked but not connecting,Now it has started connecting as well.If I close the connection,it connects all over again.AVG hasn't picked anything up and Comodo hasn't batted an eyelid.I really would like to go back to using the desktop icon.please help!
