AOL Broadband speed problem
      #366096 - Fri Sep 21 2007 05:41 PM

Hello there, i use AOL 8mb broadband and for about 2 years up until about 5 months ago i had a steady 4mb line connection from this. At the start i contacted AOL and asked why i couldnt get the whole 8mb as im very close to a telephone exchange but got no answers there so i contacted BT who really wouldnt help as i was with AOL (which i thought was daft as my line is still with BT) but managed to get told that my max line speed was 4mb, so i accepted this and plodded along. Then about 5 months ago it suddenly dropped to 3mb. So i phoned AOL again and was told my line could only sustain 3mb max, i tried to expain that i had been recieving 4mb but was told i could only have 3mb not 4mb and certainly not 8mb. So i called BT again to check the line and once again they were very unhelpful but eventualy they told me that my line could only sustain a maximum of 3mb . When i tried to explain the speed had dropped from 4mb i got told it wasnt there problem as im with AOL but it hadnt dropped, i was only able to get 3mb. Now this last week it has now dropped to about 2.5mb and i dont know what to do. AOL will undoubtably say that is my max speed and BT will be unhelpful and say the same. I have checked my areas postcode max speed on several broadband area speed checkers and get the same result each time from each of them at 6.5mb.
Can anyone help me with some advice with this?

I'm afraid your argument is with AOL not BT. AOL provide you with your Broadband service, not BT. All BT do is provide the bit of wire between the exchange and your house. AOL are now owned by the TalkTalk, more commonly known as the Carphone Warehouse. If you can't get any satisfaction from them use your consumer power and move to a different supplier. It will still be on the same bit of wire but you may find a better standard of customer care.

If I can jump in here for a second. Moving onto a different provider is seriously tempting. But is it not a case of 'different provider, same problems'. Is there a smaller scale ISP who are big on stable connection and customer service, or are we at the mercy of all the big names. I wouldn't mind changing, but to who? My sevice up until recently has been fairly good. But when there is a problem, I have to squint my ears to try and hear someone thousands of miles away who is not helping the problem. Is there a list available of smaller ISP's who have a good track record? If so, can it be posted.

It's a case of Lumping it with ISP and BT as regards line speeds ,but in our town from 4 different Relatives computers and all located between a mile to 2 miles distant from the exchange 3 running AOL Silver, the other running Tiscali we all get the same speed of 2.2 MB! And another person I know is running AOL Platinum... I think they are getting the same speed connection too Only thing(minor) that helps is to run it wireless to keep the connection up But the AOL browser software does an Auto reconnect if the line goes off. Only had 2 Server related outages all this year

FYI
AOL Silver - Up to 8Mbps! broadband
AOL Platinum -- same service as Silver plus telephone service

Moral ignore the Platinum, stick with Silver or downgrade
