Hi
Often when my pc slows down to a near halt, I'll use task manager to try and close applications.
More often than not, there are applications 'not responding' that just will not close.
After several minutes of frustration I end up having to switch off the pc at the mains as the only way of closing it down to reboot.
Any ideas as to what the problem is here? apart from the fact I am useless with technology!!
any advice appreciated

First question , have you run Antivirus and Antspyware scans , and if so , what progs do you use ?

I presume you've scanned then , and you're PCs clean. ??
Next time your PC "slows to a near halt" open the task manager and under the "processes" tab check the CPU usage and which process/s are using it up. If you post the details we may be able to help.

OK thanks Fife, yes it is clean - I will really test your patience now!
How can I get a screenshot of task manager processes into this thread?

Don't really need a screenshot at this stage. It's more than likely that one particular process will be hogging the memory and the CPU usage will be at it's limit. If that's the case let us know it's name and it's CPU usage. Just while I'm here.........does the slow down occur during normal use e.g. browsing the net , or when you are running a few applications at the same time.

Usually the pc slows down when I am running a few applications, the problem then is that the pc is so slow that it will not allow me to close any of these applications and I often have to turn the pc off at the mains to get going again!
Sometimes it slows down for now apparent reason! For example earlier it almost stopped with just IE and task manager running.
Task Manager showed:
Cpu usage at between 0-8% with an occasional flicker to 90% PF usage at 400mb
Processes as follows:
msimn.exe 90,000k (is this msn, cos it isn't open?) ieexplore.exe 15,000k 53 other processes from 2700k down to 16k(system idle)
Does this help?

msimn.exe is Outlook Express. If that is using 90kb it suggests to me that something is wrong somewhere, particularly so as you say you only had IE and Task manager running at the time. Outlook Express must have been open in the background without your knowledge.

thx greysts
don't know why it would have been open. It wasn't showing in task manager applications running.
anyhow, i see what you mean by the 90KB, right now it is open and using just 2kb.
what could cause it to use so much memory. I'll look out to see if it is that application next time pc slows down

Your pc may be infected. W32/Agobot-JL is a worm that moves itself to the Windows system folder as MSIMN.EXE and creates registry entries to run itself on system logon:
I would suggest a full virus and spyware scan of your system to see if anything shows up.
