My home network works fine in general but I have one question..
In order to print from my networked laptop (XP home), I have to make sure the upstairs PC (XP pro) is switched on, as the printer is plugged into it.
Then.. I have to select "explore" my documents on the PC and then I am asked to enter a user name and password... only after doing that (i.e. authenticated) am I able to print.
Apart from the idea of having to purchase a wireless print server and forking out around £50 is there another way of "setting" the authentication so I don't have to keep entering a username and password?
Many thanks for any assistance!

XP Pro has built in security to stop unauthorised people logging in to it. It requires a user name and password before allowing access. There are ways of stopping it asking but it will leave your PC wide open to anyone who wishes to use it via a network. Is that really what you want for the sake of saving a few seconds typing?
Having said that, if all you are doing is sharing the printer and not the files on the XP Pro PC itself there should be a way of doing it. When you set sharing up on the printer did you tell it to ask for a user name and password?

Thanks Greysts for replying
I do realise the security issues; but all I want to do is to be able to print - not bothered about having to enter user name and password for my files; I certainly don't remember asking it to authenticate when I enabled file and print sharing when I set up the network; maybe I'll have to reset the network from scratch?

I can't be sure about this because I haven't got XP Pro loaded but if you right click on the properties of the printer and choose Sharing does it not ask if you to choose how to allow access?

Oh yes, I've checked all through those settings - looked on the security tab etc. The only other thing I can think of is to check and see if the laptop is allocated open access on the network - that's another possibility.
Although I have a feeling that I will probably have to purchase a print server at this rate!
Thanks for your input
