I;m having trouble with HMV Digital. I have purchased some digital music which I have actually paid for but for some reason the files are not anywhere on my PC! First things first, I tried to re-download them from my purchase history. A message window pops up saying that Background Intelligent Transfer Service couldn't be started, it may be disabled. Restart it etc etc.... I then went to the relevent admin tools and lo and behold, Windows is telling me that it has started!! What's going on? I have retried and retried but no luck! I am running Windows Vista Home Premium and have Norton Security running too. Not sure if there is anything else that I need to tell people...! Grateful for any help...!

A few questions first, some of which may or may not be relevant :
1. How long have you had Vista? 2. Have you ever had the service working on Vista? 3. Is the PC relatively idle when you try the downloading? 4. Have you tried with the firewall turned off?

1. It came with the laptop which I bought about 3 - 4 months ago. 2. Nope, it is the first time I have tried. Never even used HMV digital before. Although I have downloaded tunes using I-Tunes (dunno if that is relevant) 3. When you say 'idle' you mean is it doing anything else in the bground? Yes it is fairly idle. 4. No. Is it safe to do that? And (sorry for my ignorance)how would I go about that?

OK, forget 1 and 3 as they are irrelevant.
4. As you haven't mentioned a third-party firewall, I assume you're using the Vista one. Go to Control Panel > Windows Firewall > Allow a Program... > Exceptions Tab and put a tick in the 'BITS' entry. Now try the download.
2. I know nothing about HMV downloads. I wonder if this is a Vista/HMV problem. If 4 above didn't work try checking on Google if there is a user forum?

I am also getting this error message with hmvdigital. I have Windows Vista and it's a pain because it's not compatible with so many things yet!
I have tried all the suggestions made below & emailed hmv, dell (my computer makers) and the Windows technical support people, but no reply!
Please can someone else help with this issue!?
Cheers

This is the solution...!! At last..!! Success!!!!
To access the HMV Digital website using Windows Vista please right click on the Internet Explorer icon in the toolbar and select 'run as administrator'. If you do not have any icons showing please right click on a blank space in the toolbar, select Toolbars and ensure that Quick Launch is ticked. You should now be able to access www.HMVDigital.com as per normal.
To re-download your purchased music please sign in to your account at www.HMVDigital.com.
Once you are signed in to your account select the My Account link then scroll down and select the 'view purchase history' button and then check the boxes for the music you wish to re-download.
Please also ensure that the download location displayed in the download manager is for your User directory e.g. C:\Users\username_vista login name\downloads\music\.
You may change your download location from the 'change' button in the download manager. You may launch the download manager independently of downloading music by selecting the 'launch download manager' link on your account page.
If you are required to update the DRM component on your machine then please click on the following link and download the DRM security update. Please note you may be required by this website to run an Active X control:

It worked for me, lets hope it works for you too!!

Brilliant. It worked for me! Thanks Paulsmiler.
I have been trying to get round this problem for the last week but to no avail, even after contacting HMV for help and trying their suggestions.
I've been having problems downloading from Woolworths Digital too, although BITS is not mentioned in the error message. I'm now going to try and download my Woolies tracks using the Administrator route.
I'll let you know how I get on.

I have had this same problem but I dont quite understand what I should be doing from the excellent advice given, can you help me, I am a novice when it comes to computers! Thanks
