Portable Applications
      #364985 - Wed Sep 12 2007 11:17 PM

Certain members at our computer club seem to have gone daft on portable applications, " the future of computing" says one of the learned ones.

Not that I'm in the habit of visiting Internet cafes or the library although using them as an alternative to cluttering up the hard drive might be useful. Do they function as fully as an installed program with all the features? I would certainly like to know.

One of the monthly mags reckoned Microsoft will produce an OS to run from a USB3 stick late 2008. Never seen this mentioned elsewhere.

A feature could be helpful as to the why's and wherefores of this 'future of computers'.

Hi George,

We ran an article on this topic around this time last year - you can read it here - but with plenty of new portable applications released since then, it could well be time for an update.

An update should be an interesting read, more and more programs seem to be available as portable.

PC Advisor ran a feature a couple of issues back on Microsoft and San Disc getting together to create "XP on A Stick". A full OS on a USB3,PCA even published a 'how to'. Unless I've been looking in the wrong places more info is difficult to find. USB3 is an unknown commodity to me so I would be interested in this and more on the two companies venture.

Thanks for responding.
