I have two computers (siting adjacent to each other)and two young grandchildren who visit once a week, and get to use the computers on rainy days. They have recently both wanted to play one line games at the same time, but I have only one connection. Is there such a thing as a dual outlet for the modem, so thet both computers could be connected at the same time, and allow peace to prevail?

Welcome to the Webuser Forum, Privet!
Could you post a bit more information about your situation? I'd like to know what Operating System both computers use (I assume Windows XP, but correct me if I'm wrong), and also how you are connecting to the internet. Is it a modem or a network router?
Cheers,

Thanks for quick response GMAC
My new computer is running Vista while my other is running XP. I connect to the internet on broadband using a modem. I was looking on the internet for a "Y" type cable - ie one in and two out so that both could be connected at the same time, but not knowing the correct name for this type of cable (if it exists) I didn't get very far. I understand that the conventional method would be to use a router, but it seems a bit of an overkill for what might just be a passing phase.
Cheers

Indeed. Thanks for posting the relevant info.
Your solution is in a kind of cable, but certainly not a Y type one as you have specified. Doesn't exist as far as I know.
For less than £5 you can pick up a cat5e "crossover" network cable used to link both computers together. PC1 on the internet could then share its connection with PC2 with something called Internet Connection Sharing (or ICS for short).
If you do decide to go out and get this cable, I will assist in setting it all up. You can get them from places like Curry's, Comet, PC World etc. They are easily distinguished by being coloured yellow (on the tips, or entire cable sometimes), and being labelled "Crossover". They commonly look like this:

Additional little things for you to post please :
Which computer has the connection? Any firewalls installed on either computer? Do both computers have a NIC (Network Interface Card)
This picture will help you find a NIC port:

It looks a lot like one for a telephone, or dial up modem, but is just a little bigger.
Sorry for being long winded, hope you understand. Be sure that both computers have the NIC port before going out and spending any money!

Thank you for your very comprehensive reply. Had a quick look at the back of my Vista computer – can’t see a Network Interface Card, although the older computer has something that looks very like your photo detail. Since I have no real need for two computers to be connected to the internet, I will abandon my quest. The second computer was bought purely for photo and video editing, and it was the nine year old who suggested a connecting cable, which, at the time, seemed a good idea. This is the first time I have ever used a forum and I am very impressed with the speed and the quality of the response, and many thanks to GMAC.
