      #363456 - Thu Aug 30 2007 09:45 AM

Hello all,

I knew a couple of websites that did free web hosting but they all closed down or their servers not reliable. Anyone has any idea of a FREE web hosting site, its baically for online presence for about 4-6 web pages...

cheers all...
PS : I have a .co.uk domain name with...1 & 1 Domains...

Weebly.com allows you to build a free website with free hosting. You can't use your own domain though. You would have to have 'whateveryourwebsiteiscalled.weebly.com'. It's quite good though considering it's all free and you even get a blog page to go with it.

Saying that, the very basic webhosting package with 1and1 isn't very expensive. Streamline.net is another very reasonably priced webhost, about £18.99 per year for their basic package and they will let you transfer 1 domain name f.o.c. if you buy the hosting package.

i signed up with HeartInternet but then when i went through the F & Q's i noticed that i will have to transfer my .co.uk domain to them for which 1 & 1 web hosting (my current domain provider) will charge me...

Hiya
It wasn't me that suggested Heartinternet it was Jedi. I took a look at Heart last night and I remember looking at their 'free hosting' quite some time ago. I can't remember why but I decided against them in the end. Also, in the cobwebs of my mind I seem to recall them being associated with Reg 123 but don't quote me on that.

As for being charged by 1and1 for transferring your domain name, I don't think this is true. I certainly wasn't charged by 1and1 when I left them, in fact I got a refund on the unused hosting that I'd paid for in advance. I think it is probably Heart who are charging you for having your domain name transferred to them. Perhaps their normal offer is that you get free hosting through them if you buy a domain name off them which is perhaps quite a high charge? I don't know how much they're charging I haven't looked. Hope this helps. Read carefully through all the help on 1and1's site about transferring domains away from them.

NB. I've just had a thought. If you only purchased a domain name from 1and1 and didn't have a hosting package with them, perhaps then they charge for releasing your domain name. The money that you pay to 1and1 for your domain name, as far as I know, goes to Nominet UK who look after the register of all .uk domain names, so perhaps if you don't have hosting from 1and1 they need to cover their costs. Just a thought.

webaholic : u are very right..2 yrs ago i was with 1 and 1 and i (the domain name i have now) closed my account with them and my domain was sort of taken over by nominet uk & they asked me to pay £90 odds which i strictly refused as i was the owner of the domain. finally i thout if i go with 1 and 1 again i will just have to pay £11.95 so thats what i did & with 1 and 1 their .CO.UK domain are reasonable but i do not have any hosting package with them.

I have also come across this site 250MB free webspace FspHost.com ( http://www.fsphost.com/ ) anyone heard of them ?

cheers guys..

There is a free deal from Microsoft - there is no real "catch" to the offer. They will ask for details of a credit card, but they only use the info to verify your existence (and so avoid letting scammers in). You get a free top level domain - and they will pay the maintenance fees when it comes up for renewal!

Drawbacks - you cannot work on your site with an operating system lower than Win2K or WinXP. If you are running Win98SE or older OS, forget it. The other major drawback is that it is very difficult to take your domain elsewhere. There are minor restrictions on commercial use (basically no profanity, porn, or anything to do with sexploitation) Otherwise, this is just what you asked for.
