It's good to be back(Problems logging in)but I come with what seems a big problem but hopefully is not.
Security Updates download, but one attempts to install but then keeps saying it has failed...any ideas?
Security Update for Microsoft .NET Framework, Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 KB928366
It appeared that there had been problems for a few people and one solution that seemed to work and was suggested was just to delete the offending program/download. It was trying to download for weeks but just failing over and over.
I then hoped/believed that if I went back to the microsoft site, a more upto date patch may be available or this one might have been fixed. But all I that happened was that I was told that was nothing to download.
However, my pc when rebooted a few days ago and the Desktop screen was showing a little box came on the monitor to say...
HPQTHB08. Exe Appilcation error
The application failed to initialize properly(oxc000135) Click on to terminate the application.
I did and the pc continued to work since.
The Computer was disturbed today(maybe a power cut)and the same thing happened again...
I had a brainwave...
What would happen if I went into the restore area and went back to a point before I deleted the item that would not download properly(K928366)
I rebooted and all was well until the desktop screen again and this time I was greeted with a new box that said...
Fatal Execution Engine Error(ox72927oe03e)
After clicking on it...
Another box appeared saying
Common Language Runtime Debugging Services Application HPQTHB08.Exe Application exe could not be handled. Process id=oxaf8(2808) thread id=oxafc(2812) Click to Terminate application Click to Cancel the debugging Application.
The PC is working but something is wrong, I wonder if this means installing Windows XP again and that may entail a total erasing of the Hard Drive(format)or easier to fix than that. It's something I've not done before so wonder if I can do it or its a job for a repairman. Its all so confusing.
I went onto Microsoft Updates tonight and guess what, it downloaded a new update and...KB928366 is back on the system and refusing to install again.
I'm fortunate in that my files are on external drives and I've also tried to burn as much of them to DVD.
If I do attempt this, is it difficult I notice hard drive C is split so it has a recovery area? The only thing is I want to try and save my e-mails, E-mail addresses and Web Favourites somehow. So I don't lose them.
Any help would really be appreciated.
Thanks.

Hopefully yes. Check... this link...here , where the poster had the same problem. Scroll down to my third post for the solution that worked for him. Any questions please ask.
..........................................................
HPQTHB08. Exe refers to HP Image Zone and is used to improve the time it takes to load. It's not really needed so try disabling it. Click on start > run > type in msconfig > OK. When the system configuration box appears click on the "start up " tab and you should see an entry relating to HPQTHB08. Remove the tick from the box beside it and click on apply > close. You will then be asked to restart your PC for the changes to take effect.

Thank You Fifeflyer, I'm going to study your reply(I'm a bit slow :-)and make certain I have it all clear in my mind.
You know what...I do have an HP printer, which I have had for over a year, why that has caused this or it happened now after removing only what I believe to be that faulty download from microsoft...who knows. A fatal execution engine sounded pretty serious... And thank you for giving me an option to ask further questions which fingers crossed will be un-necessary.
Thought I wasn't going to be able to get back to thank you as its taken 3 attempts to log on to the forum.
Things do seem to go wrong in three's so they say.
Cheers

I've come back this morning and can see one item in the System Configuration Box that looks as though its what you are referring to. I'll ask before I proceed if this sounds like it... HP Image Zone Fas. That seems the only thing I can see that has any reference to what you suggest. I cannot seea n actual ref to HPOTHB08.
Do you think as I have done some system restores over the year, I need worry about removing them as others suggest these restoration points use quite a bit of Hard Disk space?
I feel more positive this morning

No , they're crucial and a way of restoring your PC should something go wrong. If we deal with one thing at a time we can return to this if you wish.

Just go ahead and remove the tick. Just to put your mind at ease , anything you disable from the start up can be re-enabled by reversing the procedure.

Hi Fifeflyer, Your tip seems to have stopped the problem regarding the HPQTHB08 Exe Application error and it is not appearing on the screen upon bootup.
The Security Update for microsoft. NET Framework. Version 1.1 Service Pack 1 KB928366 has tried to reinstall but it still refuses but again I am told that I have a Fatal Execution Engine Error(ox72927eo3e)
When I click on that box the following comes on the screen that says SL76 TMP Common Language Runtime Debugging Services...
Application has generated an exe that could not be handled Process id=ox65c(1628) Thread id=oxd54(3412)
Click To Terminate the application Click To Cancel the debugging application.
The difference is that the process id and thread id codes are different to the one's I was getting before.
Of course the update icon is still sitting on the computer telling me I have updates waiting to be installed.
Any ideas?
Thanks

So , with regards to the windows update fail , did you try uninstalling all versions of "net framework" and reinstalling them in the specific order that was suggested in the link ?

I've had a look in the add/remove area and found the following
Microsoft NET Framework 1.1 and Microsoft Net Framework Hotfix KB886903
Cannot see any reference to having a version 2 installed...
So I guess I should delete them? But I did notice the suggestion that this is an important download so does it have to be downloaded again? Because surely the problem will start once more.
Good job you are patient. At least I am learning at the same time...

Right my friend , what we are trying to achieve here is the installation of the failed update KB928366. There's no guarantee this will work as some of the error messages you are getting suggest the Framework is corrupt. Various websites suggest a reinstall of windows but I'm hoping a reinstall of the Net Framework components will do the business. Fingers crossed.
Lets' forget about version 2 for the moment.
Just to be on the safe side , create a manual system restore point. You'll find instructions half way down.... this page....if you're not sure how to do it. Next turn off windows automatic updates. Now , via add/remove uninstall all versions of Net Framework , in your case... Microsoft NET Framework 1.1 and Microsoft Net Framework Hotfix KB886903. Re-boot your PC and install... the latest windows installer. ( it may help with the installation ).
Now in this order , download and install.... Net Framework 1.1. Next , download and install....Net Framework 1.1 Service Pack 1 If all goes well try windows update for the download of KB928366.
Let us know how it goes. Good luck.

Sorry I've been away. Hopefully I'll get on with things now...just debating a suitable name for the restoration point :-)
And then I'll see how things go...

Fifeflyer, I created a manual restoration point with a name and todays date to make it easy to find.
When I try to delete Microsoft NET Framework 1.1 a box comes on screen and says Windows Installer:Patch could not be opened verify the package exists and that you can access it or contact application vendor to verify it is a valid windows installer patch. On the right hand side the program has no value attached to it ie:33mb or whatever.
If I try to remove Microsoft Net Framework Hotfix KB886903.Something flashes on screen very quickly but disappears and the program looks the same as before trying to delete it.
So seemingly neither can be removed.

OK Gildersleeve , life's a b**ch at times
Download the..... Windows installer clean up utility package.. Save it to your hard drive ( anywhere you wish as long as you know where to find it ). Once it's downloaded , install the programme by running the file. When that's done go to your desktop and click on start > all programs > then click on "Windows Install Cleanup". In the Windows Installer Clean Up Utility, remove all Windows Installer applications for the .NET Framework. Re-boot your PC and reinstall the Net Framework in the order i described in my last post.

Thanks again... Having created a restore point and attempting to delete the programs in Add and remove.
Then installing the Windows Install clean up, I removed all windows Installer applications for the NET Framework.
I attempted a re boot and the computer closed down and refused to come on again. That's why I disappeared.
I tried the fuse and the switch on the case...no joy.
After an hour I tried(don't know why)and as you can see we're in business again. I've looked in the add and remove area and they are still sitting there but neither have any value next to them now and they cannot be deleted.
So though I am ready to download the programs again in the order you say that I should...do I do this whilst they are still saying that they are on the pc? Should they be totally deleted before attempting to get them again or does that not matter? In theory will they download over the top of these?

A bit of a concern. How's it running at present?

Yes they should. However , sometimes when you remove applications it can still show up in add/remove if that registry entry has not been removed during the uninstall procedure. Could you try this : click start > run > type in Microsoft.NET > click OK. Does a window appear with a folder named "framework" . If it does , does clicking on it open up a further folder containing Net Framework files ?

It appears to be running fine(a suggestion has been an overheat of the PC)but all seems well, the Hard Drive isn't making any strange noises.
If I have to reboot and suddenly disappear, at least you'll know why(then it may be a case of getting a repair person in)
I've never done reformatting or installing of Windows so it perhaps seems more difficult than it really is. I feel less pessimistic if that ends up the solution but it's all new to me.
I've burned anything of importance that I'm afraid may be lost if the pc crashes(will do photo's later)I also would like to save e-mails and Favourites/e-mail addresses(the last two seem easy to do)
On my main hard drive the only extra programs I have are Avast Antivirus, CC Cleaner, Piscasa 2, I Tunes, Winamp, Ad Aware, Nero, Adobe Reader, Real Player, Quick Time Player, Ipodder, AV Rack, Power DVD, AV Music Morpher, Mailwasher and that appears to be it.
Lots of spare space.
As to your question(at last)I followed your directions.
Yes, I found 13 pages that looked as though they had cog wheels on them. And two folders called V1.0.3705 and V.1.14322 and something called NETFXsb510 Installation Hook.
Glad this happened before I decide to sign up for Broadband which I was starting to think of doing.

If it does come to that , then I've no doubt you'll get all the help you need from this forum. You're probably half way there already by backing up your important stuff.
Now back to the problem. As I've already said , there's no guarantee that even if we get this Net Framework problem resolved , you're going to be free from error messages so if this is all causing you too much grief and you wish to retain the "status quo" , just say so. It's your PC after all.
If you wish to continue..........As you still have the Net Framework files , it seems like the installer clean up has failed to do the business so we need to try again. Have a look at.... this . You've already said you can't perform Method 1 so we'll try Method 2. Download... this...removal tool and follow the user instructions in Method 2. Once you've done that , reboot your PC and check to see if Net Framework has gone.
Fingers and toes crossed.

Fifeflyer, Just an apology for not getting back to you...I'm trying to get everything off the computer in case after trying the next idea it fails...I could try the solution first but thought it better to have the minimum amount of stuff on here.
It will be fun going through everything afterwards and putting it back on the pc or editing what I have burned as to save time a lot of stuff has not been catelogued carefully, I've just lifted it off as quick as possible. Unfortunately, as most of the DVD burning to be sure they don't fail burn at $x and take approx an hour at a time(burning and checking the files have successfully)it is taking nearly 10 hours of hard slog.
But hopefully I'll be back soon...
Thanks...

Right everything has been removed and saved except my e-mail in Outlook Express. Still looking into how I may do that(but have managed to open my Yahoo e-mail web based account again and may open a Google G Mail account.
I've just tried to open dotnetfx and it tells me the folder is corrupted or invalid :-(
