Hi all, I am having a little problem...
After lending my spare machine to my nephew to work on a school project I discovered a bunch of downloaded music etc (read: teenage boy ).
After deciding to reformat the whole machine I am having difficulties with a couple of things:
1) I am getting several Trojan warnings - I run Active Virus Shield, AVG 7.5, Spybot, IE Privacy Keeper, Super Anti Spyware. I was told by a colleague that there may be a conflict between these programs, and that I should try fewer. 2) When I try to access the Control Panel to delete these programs I cannot see the Control Panel anymore. When I click on Select Program Access and Defaults I get the message "this operation has been cancelled due to the restrictions in effect on this computer. Please contact you system administrator". 3) When I check the other user on the computer - my fiance, she is listed as a Limited User... I should be the only administrator.
What should I do? My initial aim was to clear up the Trojan warnings... now it appears that much more is happening beneath the surface. Do I need to reformat again?
Thanks

Hi newuser , answer to question 1 : i don't use Active Virus Shield but a quick Google says it "Protects your PC from both known and unknown virus attacks, spyware, Trojan horses and malware" and that it is a comprehensive anti-virus software prog. As running more than one antivirus can cause conflicts , running this alongside AVG is not a good idea. You therefore need to decide which one you wish to keep and remove the other. It may help you to know that AVG , Spybot , IE Privacy Keeper and Super Anti Spyware along work fine together. Question 2....sounds like you need to change Spybot's settings. Open Spybot and on the toolbar click on "mode" and click "choose advanced mode". Now go to the bottom left hand of the screen and click on tools > IE tweaks > if there is a tick beside " lock IE control panel against opening from within IE " , remove it.
Could you let us know which prog is giving you the trojan warnings , what they are , and if possible where they are located .

Thanks for the reply, Active Virus Shield is an AOL product.... although I don't know where I got it! I checked Spybot, but there were no check marks on the IE control panel locks. I am rerunning the Active Virus Shield now... as soon as the results are in I will post the threats and their locations. Thanks again.

OK, after running the scan again it detects no threats. The previous one was detected in my temp IE files folder, which is now empty.
So now, my only concern is how to re-establish a connection to the control panel.

I would start off by uninstalling Active Virus Shield.
Have you got Tweak UI installed.... click me

Thank you... I couldnt uninstall Active Virus Shield at first - it kept repeating the same message. However once I had foloowed the link you sent me I could access the Control Panel and then I uninstalled it.
Thanks, you have been a great help.

Nice one. Had you actually used TweakUI or did you just remove the registry value regardless ? .

No, I hadn't used TweakUI... infact, I hadnt heard of it until you mentioned it. When I read through the article you sent me I saw the '1' entry in he file so I made it a '0' - job done!!! Thanks so much for your help and advice.

Hi, I am having a similar problem with accessing control panel (which seems also to have happened since my sons started accessing music download sites onto their Christmas MP3 players!). There was a trojan and spyware warnings that I managed to clear (following another thread and using SmitfraudFix).
But I am unable to access Control Panel at all. It's hidden on the normal menus, but trying to go through other links, I get a message "This operation has been cancelled due to restrictions in place on this computer. Please contact your system administrator." I'm running Windows XP on my home PC, using Symantec Antivirus Corporate Edition, and currently using Windows Defender, though I wasn't using Defender at the time the problem started. Any tips as to how I get this fixed? Thanks.

Was this a self fix or by a trained malware/hijack helper. ??

It was a self-fix. The Control Panel access problem was present before the fix though.

As you've probably guessed , the likely cause/start of your problems. Being unable to access the control panel is a strong sign the trojan/spyware issue is not fully cleared. With respect , a self fix is not the best way. This forum has trained malware experts who deal with this type of thing on a daily basis. To get the right help please go to the... hijackthis forum...and read... TheFatControlleR's ...post for instructions on how to post a log. If you then post a log in that forum , along with a brief description of your problem , an expert will come along and check things out for you .
