Selective blocking of outgoing email (wierd?)
      #362785 - Fri Aug 24 2007 05:26 PM

The email I have is web-based with register.com. I do not use POP or SMPT with windows or outlook. So its more like a hotmail account except I have my own domain name and pay for extra space (10 GB).

One email particular, of a highly sensitive and important nature, was being stopped from going out of their system without error or notification. We tested this email many times and other ones, and only this one was being selectively blocked from going out. The register.com technical people did not know what it was. They told me they will contact me within 24hours. Their answer 24hours later was " There was a small misconfiguration (in their system) and is fixed now."

When I asked how can a configuration stop certain emails (the sensitive ones) and allow others? The supervisor told me he did not know. and When I asked to speak to the technical people that would know. He said "sorry I can't do that, but your email is now fixed." and he would not pass me to anyone else.

I am not happy being told that it has been fixed without an explanation of what happened, since the misconfiguration was selectively stopping the sensitive email and not others. there was nothing illegal done by me, but the information on this email was highly confidential.

What could have been the problem? Are my emails under threat?

Thanks

I would make a guess at the recipient, subject or specific words or phrases in the body of the mail.

I can think of any number of reasons why it might have been blocked but they are all conjecture because your service provider won't tell you.

The email might have contained a word or phrase that the providers spam blockers didn't like. The recipients email server might have been wrongly placed on a black list. If you want to indulge in real paranoia the email might have contained a word or phrase that interested the security services of the UK or the USA.

I could go on making up more and more fanciful explanations but what would be the point? I don't know the answer, nor do you and they aren't going to tell you.

I have to say that if this mail was really did contain information that sensitive, why on earth are you using email for such stuff? Surely good old fashioned registered mail would be far more secure.

If you don't like their attitude the obvious solution is to take your business elsewhere. You could have a Googlemail account for nothing which presumably will do all you want.
