Hello,
XP, BT external modem,AOL Silver Broadband.
Can anybody tell me how fast my broadband internet speed should be in general?
I am aware that it depends on the distance from the exchange and length of phone extension runs, etc. but AOL have recently upgraded stating that the internet speed should now be a lot better with a noticeable difference.
I am getting 486 kb/s download and 215 kb/s upload according to an online speed test I recently ran, is this good, average or bad as I don't notice any improved difference from pre AOL upgrade works.
A side note, I lost my internet connection on Saturday. I contacted them when it went off and they informed me that it would be back on in the morning but wasn't, three phone calls and 3 days later the AOL representative had to reset my modem for it to work saying that it was set wrongly and the setting was for a router and not the BT modem and this is why it didn't automatically come back on. This would be a good answer apart from I don't think this was true? anyway it was AOL who set my modem following a previous problem.
Any advice welcome.

Hi, depending on the status of your phone line, an AOL Silver connection will provide speeds of up to 2mbps. I have been with them a long while now, and have been promised an upgrade to the 2Mbps in the autumn, currently I have 1Mbps. Your speed seems low - have you downloaded a lot, and therefore exceeded their 'fair usage' policy? You can test you speed here amongst other places. Clive.

Do you use AOL's software/browser to connect to the internet? I removed it, and connect directly through Firefox, and get good results. If the problem is with your line or something else you will not improve the speed by switching ISP's, so maybe a check with BT may help, before you change - probably locking yourself into a new contract in the process. Just a thought!

Could be the issue lie in the driver the One that comes with the Aol package is been updated last year and Its worth getting the Computer check up enabled coupled with the One-Click Fixes find downloadlinks to both on the Settings Menu Under Computer check up
And Go to Keyword "Drivers" and Locate the Driver for your Modem Has clear pictures as to what Driver is for each modem (its the entire BB installation Program ) Save that and Use it instead of the Installation CD in Future Takes about 2 minutes to Swap over PS All you Have to do is uninstall the Modem from the Start menu item labelled "BT Voyager 105 ADSL Modem " ,and then open the driver program and remove/refit the Blue USB cable when It says so
