I am absolutely inundated with spam and I believe that the best way to solve this problem is to change my whole e-mail address. I am quite happy with my existing provider, Orange, and I am on broadband with their starter package.
I understand that I can easily register a second account under a completely different address but will my existing broadband connection charge (£14.99 per month) cover this?
How do I close my existing account so that these offending e-mails no longer come in to my computer?
How will this affect my existing antivirus and firewall software?
As a geriatric internet user I am not very computer literate so any advice in words of one syllable (some hope!) would be gratefully appreciated.
Thanking you in advance, John

Well you shouldn't be. Orange have made no attempt to block spam at their end, they are quite happy to send it on to you. Any half decent ISP would have spam blockers on their own servers.
I don't know how many email addresses you get with your account but I would guess around 5. The problem you will have is that all these addresses will be virtually the same, something like fred@bloggs.orangehome.co.uk. The only bit that will change is the first part and as spammers are only interested in the bit after the @ you'll still get caught.
To get a completely different address you will need to consider a different provider, something like Google where your address would be fred.bloggs@googlemail.com. That doesn't mean you will leave Orange as a provider of your Broadband services, simply that you would access your mail via Google.
Your antivirus and firewall software won't be affected at all.

Sorry to come so late onto this thread but I'm on Orange and they do have Spam Filters on their server using MacAfee as provider. Per Orange website: "How does Orange’s free Anti-spam service work?
Our Anti-spam service is provided free for all customers using a Orange email. For Broadband customers, the system automatically filters your incoming emails and ‘tags’ messages it recognises as spam with a clearly marked *** SPAM ***. This should make it easy for you to select and delete these mails.
If you are an Orange Mobile or Broadband customer, you can access your emails through Outlook Express (or other email software) or alternatively via Webmail. You can check the Anti-spam settings to set your preferences to how the system handles spam email.
Occasionally, you may receive spam emails which are not caught by our spam filters, if this happens and you are a Broadband customer you can report the email to us by using the ’Spam’ button in Webmail, helping us update our systems to identify similar messages in future. You cannot currently do this from Outlook Express."
I get about 2-300 Spam Emails a day, 99% of which go to my Junk Folder on the Orange server, the few remaining ending up in Outlook if I don't clear them from the server first and add them to my Orange Blocked List. Whilst the number is annoying and I too am tempted to get another Email account, I think the Orange Spam filter is pretty effective.
