good and bad web hosting?
      #361184 - Mon Aug 13 2007 11:46 AM

Of all the website we make, we must go through the good and the bad when it comes to web HOSTING.

The Good:
I use "1 and 1" ( http://www.1and1.co.uk ) and have NEVER had a problem with them.
My site is never down, there is never a problem with the server and I am happy I chose them.

The Bad:
I am currently Helping with building a website for some friends. They had already paid for their web space etc so I simply got the relevant info (ftp address etc).
They went with "X-Fire" and in just 3 weeks, I have found it to be terrible!
The server is down every other day!
I am constantly struggling to upload files and people can hardly visit the site because it is down so often.

Anyone else? Who do you see as good and bad when it comes to web Hosting?

I agree with you about 1 and 1, I too have never had a problem with them

I used 1and1 for a while and they were excellent. I couldn't get to grips with their online website creator tool though, I found it very slow and cumbersome and as I had no html experience whatsoever at that time I needed a host with a better online website creator tool so I chose streamline.net.

They are, on the whole quite good, and very reasonable at just £23.99 per year for their basic package. However I used the Site Wizard to create my website, which I think is a third party tool and the files are stored on a third party server (which I didn't know then but I certainly do now). The other week they lost my files!! I only have a 1 page site at the moment, but nevertheless it took me about three hours to recreate it from scratch. Luckily my site was still on Streamlines server and as I have since learnt basic html I could look at the page source and recreate it exactly as it was before. Had it been a previous personal site that I'd made with Site Wizard which was about 10 pages and I had put hours and hours into, then I would have been really sick.

The moral being that whilst Streamline may be OK, their Web Wizard is not to be trusted, so I'd advise anyone planning on making a site of more than 1 page to learn html and store the files on your own PC.

Nothing is ever straightforward, but how boring would that be?

I have a managed dedicated server with 1and1 and it is excellent. Never crashed once and it is very fast. I would recommend them to anyone.

www.BRINKSTER.com absolutely awful customer service, very nice packages but no support. Best host in my opinion is www.ace-host.net superb support very well priced and super uptime.
