Broadband speed - again!
      #360592 - Thu Aug 09 2007 10:36 AM

I have recently become a broadband user with DirectSave Telecom. I don't think I have a problem with DST. So far they have been very helpful, but my download speed has not exceeded 600kb/s and is sometimes less than 100kb/s, as shown by the download window on a Vista based laptop. I have been using the speed tester at st.tstools.co.uk. This consistently gives me readings of greater than 2Mb/s and this morning it was 5Mb/s, but I have never achieved that when downloading a big file - I have used one of the game download sites to download a demo as a test of download speed. It has never been greater than about 200kb/s. Any idea what is happening? Why the big difference between the speed test and actual download speed? Does the speed test show that the bt phone wiring and modem connection are okay?

Eddie

i just went to st.tstools.co.uk. and it says i can download at 3.5 Mb.

i'd give that speed test the big heave ho.

try a more reliable test like HERE

it won't tell you your d/load speed , but it will tell you your connection speed.

What does that test actually do. It gives me a set of readings that vary from 1Mb/s to 3Mb/s, but it does not explain why I get less that 100kb/s when I try to download an actual file, eg a games file.

you get a set of figures like this :-

1st 128K took 250 ms = 524288 Bytes/sec = approx 4362 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 265 ms = 494611 Bytes/sec = approx 4115 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 266 ms = 492752 Bytes/sec = approx 4100 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 422 ms = 310597 Bytes/sec = approx 2584 kbits/sec

the figure i have put in BOLD is your speed. add the 4 together, divide by 4 and that is your average speed.

mine is about 3.8Mb

the speed of the d/load depends on where you are d/loading it from, if it is from p2p it depends how many peers there are and how many leeches.
