Problems with BT Broadband connection (again!)
      #360521 - Wed Aug 08 2007 09:53 PM

The internet light on our BT voyager 210 ADSL router has been going out, sometimes when the DSL light is flashing, but also sometimes when the DSL light is on normally. At these times, the internet won't work and the only way to solve the problem is by switching the router off to reset it.
We have also noticed that our broadband connection is running slower.
We think it may be something to do with our phone line as there is sometimes interference on the line, but have no idea what might be causing this, as we pretty much eliminated everything that was connected.
Is it just a coincidence that a BT engineer was working in the box up the road from us just before the problems began?
And, if the problem is down to BT themselves and their equipment, how do we prove it? When we had problems similar to this just over a year ago, BT would not accept it could be their fault, instead blaming our equipment and our distance from the exchange, and yet that problem seemed to suddenly right itself overnight after a long and hard battle with BT!
Would we just be better switching to cable broadband?

If you are experiencing interference and all this started after you spotted the engineer down the road, it is likely to be a problem with the line, not your equipment.

Just make sure though. Unplug the router and any other equipment apart from one phone. See if there's still interference. Also try testing out your filters too, and make sure that they are plugged into every device on the line. If you're positive that the filters are ok, and you're still getting a rough connection...

Give BT a call and explain to them that there is interference on the line. Mention that work took place in your area prior to the trouble happening, and ask for an engineer to come take a look.

The exact same thing happened to our house a year or so ago; Interference on the line, shaky Internet conenction etc. BT said that there was a fault in the line, and they explained that they had had a complaint from another house on our street recently as well. Engineer was sent out the day after, problem was fixed.

If you're friendly with a few of your neighbours, its worth asking if they have had similar trouble

Good luck sorting it!

Thanks for your reply GMAC. We are still having problems, with lots of interference on the phone line, and whenever we receive or make a phone call, this trips the broadband connection. BT tested the line yesterday, and said they could find no fault! Our broadband connection was down again this morning, so we plugged just a corded phone into the test socket, and we could still hear quite bad interference on the line. We contacted BT again, who still insisted the line was clear!! However, they have agreed to send an engineer out, with the warning that we will be charged if they find our equipment is the problem. We wait with baited breath, but totally convinced that there is some sort of fault on the line which is down to BT.
I know this might be a silly question. but does anyone know when BT test the line, do they test from the exchange right to where the line enters your house, or just up to the junction box?

Just to satisfy yourself that it is the line and not your t/p handset or some other telephonic equipment I would disconnect everything from your telephone line and extensions (if any) and then borrow another corded phone and go direct to the master socket. If you are still getting line noise make sure you get the engineer to agree with you about the noise and insist that it's fixed. It's almost certainly a dirty contact somewhere, perhaps in a junction box attached to your house or in the street.

If you are getting interference on your phoneline without filters connected then this will for sure be whats causing your problem.

Whenever a call comes through its increasing the noise on the line and therefore the modem/router cannot determine the signal from the noise and hence drops the connection.

Instead of wasting time trying to convince the Broadband helpdesk that this is the problem contact 150 (residential) or 154 (business) and tell them about the line noise. They can get an engineer to look at your line within 24 hours.

Please do make sure you check the line without filters first though to make sure the interference is still present.
