I'm going on holiday to Orkney. I'll mostly be based in Stromness, but will be diving all around the island. Does anybody know about 'net access in the area?
1) Mobile phone (GPRS) coverage, both in Stromness, and offshore. 2) Wi-Fi hotspots. 3) Internet cafes.
I already have an Orange phone, but I will also be getting a new phone, so will be able to choose the second network based on what has the best coverage.
I have tried looking on the 'net, but haven't had much luck yet.

Don't know about wireless hot spots but I do know you'll have a wonderful holiday in the Orkneys. We went there last year and it was fantastic.
I took my mobile and had no difficulty in connecting even in the most remote parts. Bear in mind that with the oil industry heavily involved in the area you should have no difficulties with the mobile.
I don't remember seeing any internet cafes but if they exist I would have thought Kirkwall and Stromness would be the most likely places. In fact there's one right here.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

There are two Tourist Information Centres in the Orkneys. They may have a list of cafes/wi-fi spots for you.
6 Broad Street - Kirkwall - Orkney KW15 1NX Telephone: 01856 872 856 Fax: 01856 875 056
Ferry Terminal Building - The Pier - Stromness - Orkney Telephone: 01856 850716

Thanks for the posts. I'm sorry for not replying before, but I didn't get an e-mail telling me that anybody had replied. The tourist information office was very useful.
