Changing ntl/Virgin Media modems
      #359849 - Fri Aug 03 2007 12:18 AM

I bought a ntl/Virgin Media modem to replace my broken one, however when I first tried to connect it it always showed dns errors. So I found out the DNS server and entering it with no success. Took advice to turn off the PC, turn off MODEM, wait for 30 secs, turn on MODEM, wait until only power, ready, sync and send were on, but 5 minutes I waited with no joy so I just turned the comp on anyway, still didnt work, tried taking the dns's from my other connection.. but still not working.. does anyone know if theres a compatability issue at all with Virgin Media(Telewest) connection??

Where did you get it from? The only people authorised to install these modems are Virgin Media themselves and they won't sell you a new one as they belong to VM. Whoever sold you it to you has conned you.

The reason your new one won't work is because the MAC number hasn't been registered with Virgin Media and only an engineer can do that. You COULD try using the VM CD to install it but I doubt it will work. If your VM modem was broken VM will supply you with a new one free of charge.

I know you don't have to register the MAC address of a router or NIC but note that it says the MAC address of the modem is used. That address is registered when you first install the modem. Any attempt to change the modem will result in the MAC address changing which will be picked up by VM and blocked. The only way to get a MAC address changed is to ask VM to do it and they, of course, will refuse because they haven't supplied the new modem themselves.
