Hi Forum,
I'm looking to take my first step into the world of Wi-Fi, and I could do with some advice please.
I currently have my PC in the living room, my wifes in one bedroom, and possibly adding a laptop at a later date? All PC's run WinXP home, are connected by a speedtouch 330 via USB, (Each has their own modem, plugged in or out When internet access needed) to a 2MB tiscali connection. At the moment all I want for now is for mine and my wifes PC's to have net access at the same time, but I have no idea where to start? I don't mind getting bits step by step, but any suggestion as to what components I need, and which ones to buy would be appreciated. As I'm new to this I don't have a clue about costs, but budget items is the best plan right now in case I mess it all up!
Any help appreciated.
Nick

You will need a Wireless modem/router which will replace your existing Speedtouch 330. That will mean that you will put the details of your current connection (name, password etc.) into the router and it will make the connection to your ISP. You will therefore end up with an 'always on' broadband system. From that moment you can connect up to 4 PCs via an ethernet cable to the router and up to 251 PCs via wireless all at the same time. The connection would be pretty slow if all 256 PCs decided to log on at the same time though!
I presume your own PC would be quite close to the existing 330 modem so you would connect that direct to the router and you wouldn't need to buy anything extra. You have two choices for your wife's PC. If it's feasible to run an ethernet cable from her PC to the router then again you wouldn't need to do anything else. If that isn't possible she would need a wireless receiver in her PC in order to connect to the router via wireless.
As to the hardware I would normally look to eBuyer for my gear but there are lots of suppliers out there. The industry at the moment are trying to agree a new standard for wireless internet known as 'N'. They haven't agreed on the final look of the system but Netgear have already produced one here and that comes with a free adaptor for your wife's PC.
If there is anything else you would like to know, please come back to us.

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

Thanks Spencer, as always a decent easy to understand answer.
I'll have a look around for bits now. Thanks for the offer of further help! I may well need it!
