Can this Clash theoretically happen?
      #358524 - Sun Jul 22 2007 01:15 AM

I was having a chat with a friend and the subject got around to wireless routers, and He says casually why don't you buy the same as me ?
But I thought, say we live in houses on the same block with the same equipment (or a close radius) There is a good chance he and I could pick up each others online activity!

Is that correct or is there an alert showm if there is a confict of routers?

And is there an "Alert" tool available?

Hmm, I looked this up for a bit before:

Clicky

Points 4 and 5 relate to what you're saying there.

Leading on from there, even if you and a friend bought the exact same equipment, you would still be able to prevent a clash by using different network names, different wireless channels and maybe by using different standards (a/b/g).

If you were concerned more about the security side, theres always the WEP or WPA/PSK security settings to stop the average joe tapping into your network with their wireless enabled computers etc.

I've never seen a router alert me that it is conflicting with another in the area. The only evidence I've seen is some very bad signals. The same goes with an alert tool, but there are devices on the market now that can detect wireless signals from pretty much anything - usually used for investigating interference.

In conclusion, theres pretty much no harm in buying the same equipment as long as the network names are different and you use different channels to stop interference. On the + side, there's someone around who knows how to set it up! :P

Thanks for your time and trouble
Most of the things there are a bit too technical (for now) but is a good reference point to go back to
