HijackThis - READ THIS BEFORE POSTING
      #358300 - Fri Jul 20 2007 10:20 AM

You MUST read and follow these instructions before posting your log, or we may not be able to help.

General Guidelines
  • You act on any advice you find or are given in the Webuser.co.uk forums AT YOUR OWN RISK. Please read our site terms for a full disclaimer. This is not an official service and advice is offered by volunteers.

  • Please be aware before posting that this site is fully indexed by major search engines and we are unable to remove posts that have been indexed.

  • You are advised to accept help in this forum from recognised HijackThis helpers ONLY. These members of the Web User forum have HijackThis Helper underneath their name on the left hand side, or they will be Moderators or Administrators . New volunteer HijackThis Helpers are welcomed but MUST receive authorisation before posting live help to users. Please send a personal message to a member of staff if you'd like to join the HijackThis team.

  • Also please note that help is only available for personal use (home computers). If you are on your work computer, we won't be able to help. A 'Work' computer in this context includes any PC used in a commercial environment and any used by self employed individuals.

The HijackThis Forum
  • This forum is designed to keep your computer free from harmful software, often referred to as spyware, adware or malware. It's possible to run a simple analysis tool to find out where these unwanted programs are hiding. You can then post the report on this forum and a HijackThis Helper will advise you how and what should be removed from your PC.

Before you Start
  • You should have installed the latest system updates on your computer. If running Windows XP without Service Packs, you will be asked to install at least Service Pack 1a before any help is provided. Many people have unlicensed copies of Windows and don't even realise it. Unfortunately, unlicensed copies of Windows are unable to install the Critical Updates / Service Packs which are vital for the safe and 'relatively' secure running of the Operating System. Our Helpers would be wasting their time fixing an unpatched machine as reinfection is usually immediate.

  • XP users can click here for Service Pack 1a. Choose the 'Network Installation' link for a standalone download. If you already have SP1a, please refrain from installing SP2 until given the all clear as malware can prevent a clean installation.

Do's and Don'ts
  • Please do not post your log or request for help in someone else's thread. We have a strict one user per thread policy. Such posts are likely to be removed without explanation.

  • Please do not start multiple threads on the same issue. Duplicate threads will also be deleted without explanation.

  • Please keep all replies in your original thread. If you can't find your original post, go to Who's Online in the links at the top, click your username, and click Show All Users Posts. This will bring up a list of your posts. Find the appropriate post and click the link.

  • If you run an anti-virus check or spyware removal tool immediately before posting your log, please ensure you have rebooted your machine before running the HijackThis program and generating a log. Some malware is only properly removed upon reboot.

  • Please include a breakdown of the problem(s) you are experiencing when you post your log and keep the HijackThis Helper informed about the machine's progress throughout the fix.

  • The HijackThis helpers on this forum are volunteers, so please treat them with respect. If there is a delay responding to your post, please be patient. Do not send your HijackThis log to Helpers or Moderators in a private message as it will only delay the response. If you click Reply on any of your Helper's posts, they will receive an email notification of your reply.

  • Do not repeatedly post to your thread one after the other. This bumps the thread to the top of the forum. The Helpers work from the bottom upwards!! If you are waiting longer than 48 hours for a reply, please click here and post a reminder. Ensure you include the URL to your thread.

  • And last but not least, tell the HijackThis Helpers the outcome of any fix they provide. Analysing HijackThis logs is a time consuming exercise so it's only polite to inform them of the outcome and say thank you if the fix is successful.

Installing HijackThis
  1. If you do not have a copy of HijackThis or do not have the latest version (1.99.1) then download it from any of the following locations:

  2. Double-click the file you've just downloaded and click on the unzip button to install the program. It will be installed to the C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis\ folder by default.

  3. Start HijackThis and click the Do a system scan and save a log button to perform a scan and create a log file. When the scan is complete, notepad will open up with the log file in it. While in notepad, press Ctrl-A to select all text and then Ctrl-C to copy the text to the clipboard.

  4. Now start a new thread in the HijackThis forum by clicking POST which is centrally positioned just under the main forum options.

  5. In the data-entry window, press Ctrl-V to paste the log into the window. Add any other comments which you believe might be helpful in our analysis. Place a check in the [X] I want to preview my post box and click the Continue button. Proof read your post and click the OK, submit button when you're happy with your request for help.
