Hi, Just moved to broadband, TalkTalk 8Mbps on Win98. Tried 2 Modems using USB. One (Huawei MT882) works reasonably well, the other (second hand SpeedTouch 330 with installation CD) has the following problem:
There appears to be an initial fast burst of activity after clicking a link but this is not sustained. Small web pages download quickly and reliably. Large ones stall part way through and never complete. After reading the manufacturers website about 8MB speeds, tried changing to Isynchronous mode (whatever that is?) and tuning the value of RWIN. No difference.
Any suggestions please?

Number one suggestion - update your operating system. Win98?? USB support is non-existent on Win98 so I guess you are using Win98SE but even that was full of bugs. On top of that, using an 'always on' broadband connection with such an old OS will leave your system wide open to infection. If you really must continue with Win98 then you need to get a router with a built in firewall and connect to it via ethernet which was actually designed for networking. USB certainly wasn't and even less so in Win98SE.

Your "Number one suggestion" means a new PC, you arn't by chance a PC salesperson are you? I am on Win98 (not SE) and the other modem works satisfactorily via USB. The problem modem is USB only. I take your point about infection risk, but would still like to solve the problem (without the cost of a new PC)
Number two suggestion please!

No I don't sell computers, I try and fix broken ones. I gave up trying to fix Win98 PCs because I found it to be a pointless exercise. If you must use out-of-date equipment and second hand modems then I haven't got a second suggestion.

The Huawei MT882 is actually a full adsl modem router so ditch the ST330.
If possible also forget about the usb connector on the Huawei MT882 and install using the ethernet port. If your PC hasnt got a Network card then you should be able to pick one up for about £5-8. They simply click into a space PCI slot inside your computer.
Information on setting up the Huawei MT882 via ethernet and without the need for the TT software.
