Please could you help me with setting up a wireless printer which my daughter can then access from her laptop? Laptop is running XP and is connected wirelessly . She used to be able to print from the laptop with no problems, but now it just holds everything in a queue. Network printer can be seen. I have tried searching for the printer again to establish connection to print but it comes up with an error, saying I need administrator rights to access, or it will say, this service is unavailable. Any help much appreciated. The network printer works fine when printing from the new vista laptop. Network printer is attached to main PC running XP. Many thanks in advance.

Have you recently installed or changed a firewall on the PC that has the printer connected?

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

I would guess you need to allow access through the firewall to the printer. Try to connect to the printer again then look at the firewall traffic log to see if the laptop IP Address is being blocked

I was under the impression that you had some other firewall, not just the Windows one as you said you had recently changed it.

I installed free gift of Panda Platinum 2007, but it slowed my PC right down, so I took it off. Checked the printer problem again, and the error message is now diferent. It says there maybe a problem with the network printer and I may have to install different drivers. Tried uninstalling the network printer on the laptop and reinstalling it, but still no joy, and same eror message, although works fine with other new laptop (which runs Vista).

I need to go back and check some things with you. Can you give me a list of what computers you are trying to connect to the printer, which operating system they have and which one has the printer connected. Also which PCs can and can't actually connect to the printer and use it.

Main PC that the printer is connected to is running Windows XP Professional and is a fairly new Dell. Printer set to share as network printer. All networked PC's can be seen on the network.
First laptop is an Acer running Vista premium, prints to network printer perfectly. Second laptop (the one with the problem) is running Windows XP Professional, but is quite old and the size of RAM is 128MB, so isn't the fastest of laptops, but is connected to the network perfectly with a network card. Third PC connected to the network runs Windows Home, has 256MB RAM, can print to network printer when it feels like it, sometimes it will another time it won't.
All PC's are in the same workgroup. I hope this helps.

128mb of RAM to run Windows XP Pro? I'm surprised it actually runs at all, let alone does network printing. First thing I would do is put some more RAM in the PC. The Swap file on the hard disk must be working overtime to keep the laptop running. Try that first and then lets see where we go from there.

Upgrading the old laptop isn't really an option, I will try and lessen the programs running on it before printing, besides, it has printed ok before. The problem seems to lie with the network printer.

If you can print from two out three machines, it sounds much more likely that the problem lies with the laptop rather than the printer.

Thanks for your help. I will just print things out for her by putting the docs on my USB key, and transferring to the desktop PC. Her old laptop isn't worth upgrading with more memory, its far too old now.
