Firstly, I am sorry if this is in the wrong forum, I am not sure if this is a connection problem or a Windows problem. Running XP SP2, Virgin.net as ISP, and connected via speedtouch 330 usb adsl modem. No network, no router. I experience an intermittant connection cutoff. It happens about one connection in ten, always immediately after connection after having been on-line for about 2 seconds. When I then reconnect, all is well and I can surf away. The only clue I have is when I consult the event viewer and it throws up the following:- Warning...source server, category "none", event ID 2504......The Server could not bind to transport\device NetBT_Tcpp_ {then a long string of numbers}
I have done all the anti nasty scans I can think of and have turned up nothing.
I cannot find a logical explanation of this on the web.
This problem has started only in the last four days, and is not concurrent with any software/hardware changes (none made) nor any security updates (none updated)
Can some kind soul take me by the hand and offer an explanation, and, even better, a fix ?

this may sound odd but I have the same set up as you and I'm getting the exact same thing! not very often but it has happened several times! If I connect through outlook to check mail it will come up saying I'm connect but then 2secs later when trying to check for mail it will say I'm not connected and I have to "reconnect" which then works fine! I've found I have the same error message you've mentioned in event viewer and also it mentions about the time provider NtpClient is configured to acquire time from one or more time source! but like you I've no idea why it's started doing this or how to sort it but it seems as we are both on virgin that it must be linked to them I would think?

Thanks for your response. This dual instance of the same prob. does point to it not being a problem in the PC. It could very well be a Virgin server thing, or even a BT thing as that name seems to crop up in the error report. Will drop a line to Virgin helpdesk to see if they can help, but don't hold your breath as they are not the swiftest to reply. In the meantime I have had another look on the web and the only instances of the problem I can find all seem to relate to glitches on networks.......but I am stand alone and not on a network. Will wait for Virgin, and also for anyone else who may pass by this post.

When you looked up the error in the event log, I assume that you looked at the properties of the error? Well in the little panel of the window that you opened for that information, there should be a link to Microsoft help; from that it will tell you what exactly caused the problem and what user action is required (if any). It will also provide any available links to the Microsoft site to explain it and, if possible, to fix it.

Hello, sildalcea, and thank you for your helpful and full answer. I followed the route you describe, only to be more confused than ever by the answers given therein as they all referred to problems arising on networks, specifically network printers, which cannot apply as I am not on a network. However, I think I may have the answer courtesy of mgmcc on another forum who gave the following possible fix. Go network connections>your adsl connection>networking>internet protocol tcp/ip>properties>advanced>wins tab> and in there make sure that "netbios tcp/ip" is disabled.
I have done this and so far have had no disconnections. Will keep my eye on things and see if that is indeed the cure.

A quick update on my last post to say that unfortunately the fix advised to me and as stated above has not cured the problem.
Sooooo............any other fixes on offer, please.

If you really want a cure and are prepared to lash out a few bob, get rid of your Speedtouch 330 and buy yourself a small modem/router. USB never was, and still isn't, designed for networking. They had to go through all sorts of hoops to make it work and it just doesn't do the job properly. You already have a network interface card (NIC) in your PC that works via an ethernet connection and it is ten times more reliable than USB.

Ok greysts, am going to take your advice and will go up to the dreaded PC World tomorrow am ans see what I can get. One silly question if I may............would such a connection beast as a modem/router still go through adsl filters at the phone socket ?

The last place on God's earth you want to go to is PC World. Get one off the net. This is a good one but there's plenty of other choices.

Just an update on the above matter,...........at long last a statement from Virgin which reads "On contacting their Helpdesk, I was informed that there is a known issue with their network that is currently affecting some users - they are unable confirm when it will be rectified." (this is quoted from a post made by someone else on a different forum)
So, the problem is at the Virgin end, and we can only await rectification, or switch ISP.

It doesn't mean that your problem is at the Virgin end. Just because Virgin say they've got a problem with one particular part of their network, it doesn't follow you have the same problem. Have a look at the Virgin Service Status page here to see if there are any problems in your area.
