We all like different things, and people posting to this board are generally asking for our opinions, but just in case anyone's got any major criticism of any site, why not put it in a PM rather than post it on the open forum for all to read?
Praise, suggestions for improvements, anything like that would be ok, but if you've got something bad to say, or even if you think a site's rubbish, there's no point shooting people down in public. Keep it friendly.
That said, I haven't had time to check out every site yet, but what I've seen so far has been pretty good.
Who knows? Perhaps one day I'll take the trouble to find out how it's done, possibly even create my own site. Was that a pig I just saw flying past the window? Oh no. Just my Readers' Digest top prize winner's notification.

So as you see it, this isn't really intended to be an opinion site? It is only a sycophant site heaping false praise and lies on folk? Get real Barney Rubble, if they can't take fair criticism then they shouldn't ask.
What you suggest is like Hollywood - Celeb - "ooh what did you think of my last movie??" Fawning fan - "it is the most wonderful I ever saw" [grovel grovel grovel]
There is a need to be constructive and courteous, but the truth will always be heard, specially coming from THIS keyboard. How else they gonna learn anything?

I can see both points of view here, what I would suggest is that constructive criticism should be encouraged, but don't just shoot something down because it's not to your personal taste. I've looked at websites linked from here even though the subject matter is of no interest to me whatsoever. There was one in particular I thought was absolutely vile, but I didn't post on the topic because I don't think I could have done so without it seeming personal, nor did I have anything remotely constructive to say (apart from 'please start all over again, and never subject us to this sort of thing again'). So for once, I kept my trap shut.

Seems we're in the minority, Poppy, though somehow I doubt it.
To clarify what I said before, there's nothing wrong with constructive criticism, but to some extent all criticism can be destructive, and we've seen quite recently how sensitive some people can be, with flame wars nearly getting started a few times.
Any criticism can hurt, even when it's made with the best of intentions, and there has to be a point where "It's horrible. Get rid of it. Never do anything like that again" can become a bit too personal.
I agree that this isn't the place to praise everything regardless, but if (in your opinion) a site really is bad, it's more friendly to say so in a PM than in front of 700-odd registered users.

I agree to a certain extent, but the criticism also helps other people who are designing a site. When I built my first site I had loads of criticism and some of it was very harsh. I took it all in and put it to good practise. Theres a lot I can do to improve my current watercolour site, but I just don't have enough time at the moment. I've had no complaints from members, but I'm working in the background trying to increase response times and adding new content as it's required.
Sometimes critique can hurt, but it helps in the long run. I would never turn around and tell someone 'never do it again'. I believe it's an achievement just to build a site in the first place and congratulate those who try. Nobody gets it right first time.

You're right there, Jonny. I wouldn't know where to start. Perhaps one day, but I'd like to think my critics will be gentle with me if and when I do learn to create a site of my own.

Barney you should give it a go. You probably have web space with your ISP and there are probably templates you can use to get up and running.
As for content, what about your creative writing?
If you start like this you can view the source code of your site and start to learn what does what. Basic HTML is very easy to learn and there are loads of resources on the net to help you.
It really is a lot of fun and you get great sense of achievement when you see your pages 'live'.

You're right, Jonny. I've been thinking about it for some time, so I probably will get round to it eventually (did I tell you my round tuit doesn't work?).
The trouble is time. I tried buying some thyme the other day, but it seems that's not the same thing.
Being sensible for a few seconds, if I can manage that, I agree. It must be satisfying. Once you've given up work though, there just doesn't seem to be enough time. Wonder how I ever managed with a job. I'll get there one day though, and then I'll probably find someone like me who can't make it work.
