IE7 Security issue? - Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file
      #356062 - Thu Jul 05 2007 06:36 PM

Hi I hope you can help, this is my first post.

I have recently upgraded my pc to a second hand machine and have started with a total reinstall from windows xp up. I have installed all upgrades using 'Microsoft Update' to get me to where I was on my previous pc. However, I have now hit upon a problem that didn't exist on the other pc:

In IE7 I get the message: "Windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file. You may not have the appropriate permissions to access the items."

This occurs when I try to launch an install from the web ie installing acrobat reader (where there isn't a download option), when I try to open a pdf within the browser and at various other times.

I narrowed it down to IE7 by picking through various postings on the web, (but didn't find anything specifically like my experience). To confirm my suspicions, I removed IE7 and returned to IE6 where everything was ok. I then reinstalled IE7 and again everything worked ok. I then reinstalled the latest security updates for IE7 and the problem reappeared. I used add/remove programes to uninstall the security update, but the problem persisted, so I am now back in IE6.

I would welcome any thoughts or advice in how I can return to IE7 without recreating the problem.

thanks
Duff

Has no one else even come across this problem, never mind solved it?

Hello!
I found your post (and this forum) while searching the internet looking for a solution for this exact same problem with Internet Explorer 7. I have had this problem for *months* and I can't seem to find any information online or anywhere else that provides a solution!! In fact, I haven't even been able to find someone, other than you, who has described my problem so accurately. I'm SO thoroughly frustrated by this problem! I like IE7 for the most part (although I'm being WAY generous with that statement...), and I'm not crazy about the idea of downgrading permanently to 6, or to 7 and having to stop Windows Update from owning my computer every chance it gets.
But I digress.
I'm writing because I'm curious to see if you have found a solution for this problem yet, or how IE has been working for you the past several months. Have you just been dealing with the problem? Did you decide to downgrade?
I appreciate any input you have.
Thank you,
QueenaSomething

P.S. Does anyone else out there have any ideas???? I'd really like to open *.pdf's again! Thanks!!

The original poster may not get back to you as it was sometime ago.

If you get the Error: Windows cannot access the specified device, path or file. Try Right clicking the offending install > Properties > General > Click the 'Unblock' tab.

This may help if you have that option in the properties.

Hi Queenasomething

I have now resolved the problem, but unfortunately not in any scientific way that I could guarantee. I had posted this question on a number of forums, but didn't get any help from anyone, in fact you are the first person who has actually acknowledged that it is a repeatable problem. I had reached the conclusion that it was perculiar to my setup. All I can tell you is that I did remove IE7 again and then reinstalled it. but didn't do any forced security updates for a while. i have microsoft update set to run automatically, so the next time it asked me to do accept updates, I okayed it and all was well, the problem has never returned.

don't know if this helps, but best of luck.

Duff

Hi Duff,
Thank you so much for your quick reply!
Isn't it strange how "hidden" this problem is? I also think it has something to do with my personal setup...but I have to say I was really surprised that there was so few people out there with the same problem. I also ran into some problems recently with an update to my antivirus - it conflicted with my firewall, and I ended up having to install it some backwards way. Maybe these security settings have something to do with IE issue?? Who knows.

Anyway, I will try to uninstall IE7, hopefully things will come together. How long did you wait to accept updates?

Thanks again for getting back to me, and thanks for your help!!!

Hi Queenasomething

if i remember correctly, I uninstalled ie7, then with ie6 I did a microsoft windows update, once completed, I then reinstalled ie7. I didn't run microsoft windows update for at least a month or so after that and for the first week I rejected any auto update requests. When I did chance accepting the auto updates all worked ok.

hope this helps, good luck.

regards
Duff

I seem to have exactly the same problem as Duff, cannot install Adobe Acrobat reader (or any other download for that matter) Keep getting the 'windows cannot access the specified device, path, or file' message ..I can't install IE6 for some reason I keep getting messages from microsoft saying I can only install IE7 now. Please Help ! (I am a real tech novice) Thanks , Daveyuk
