Firefox appears twice in add/remove
      #355108 - Wed Jun 27 2007 10:56 PM

Just a quick question. Would there be any reason why I have 2 entries for Mozilla Firefox in add/remove programs in my control panel? It has entries for 2.0.0.3 and 2.0.0.4. I have always updated via the update option in the help menu or waited until an update comes through automatically, I have never done a new install over the top.

I wouldn't want to remove the old entry in case I end up uninstalling the whole lot.

Thanks in advance.

You are quite safe to remove 2.0.0.3. Firefox puts all your personal stuff (bookmarks, extensions etc.) in an entirely separate directory so uninstalling an old version will only remove the programme. Version 2.0.0.4 will also still be there.

Thanks.

I removed the old version and Firefox completely disappeared, I couldn't open it. But, like you said, the profile information was still there, as I just quickly reinstalled the latest version and Firefox opened with it just the way it was before and there is now only one entry in the control panel.

That shouldn't have happened. Are you sure it wasn't just the shortcut on the desktop that disappeared? However, you got it back so that's OK.

The shortcut and programs menu entry had all gone. But at least it re-installed as it was before.

I have read that the Firefox 2.0.0.3 entry in the Add/Remove list is a Registry error caused by updating to the newer 2.0.0.4 version and editing the Registry in the relavent field solves the problem.

It also advised not to remove it from the Add/Remove as it does what you have experienced.

I'll try dig out the reference to it later for anyone interested.
