Tiscali Broadband = Dial-up connection?
      #354229 - Thu Jun 21 2007 10:42 AM

Hi Guys,
I think this might be one for Kitz. I use Tiscali 2Mb and had a few problems at first due to inexperience. But this question is one they either can't or won't answer.
At first, the connection required the Username and password every time, and I soon worked out that I just needed to click the 'Dial' button to connect. When I logged off, the following window used to appear:
The 'dial-up' connection is currently active. Do you wish to disconnect?
Now, after a problem that required setting up the connection from scratch with the Tech Support, it started to connect automatically, and we were never asked if we wanted to disconnect.
Then I had another problem, set up the connection from scratch again, and now we're back to clicking 'Dial', and, for the last few days, it's started asking us if we wish to disconnect, again.
It only asks this of whoever is the first on the computer to log off each day, and it asks before the console is switched off at night.
We are connected via Thompson Speedtouch 330 USB modem.
I cannot afford a Router at the moment, and anyway, won't Tiscali penalise me if the connection is left on all the time?
What makes me really cross is that there are 3 options in the New connection Wizard, and Tiscali instruct us to use the Dial-up modem option, yet there are 2 other options that could provide 'Proper Broadband'. Everything on this connection is based on 'Dial-up', and as I was very new to computers at the time, I thought this was normal.
Would buying a different type of connection mean it could be 'Proper'?
I've checked all the settings, and the idle time before hang-up is set to 'Never'.
I 'preciate it's not a problem, but it's driving me up the wall. I just want it on, without all the faff of connect/disconnect every day.
Any tips please?
Maggie

You have a 'dial-up' connection because you are using an ADSL modem that connects via USB. The only way you can have a 'proper' BB connection is to have an ethernet connection which means replacing your Speedtouch 330 with something like this. No, Tiscali won't penalise you if it's on all day.

Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.
