I would like to have a free online email account, but I don't know which ones are safe, and which ones are the best. I need some help.

All the popular ones (Hotmail, Yahoo, Googlemail, etc.) are safe. I don't know if any are the "best". It then really comes down to personal preference.
Of course with Hotmail and Yahoo, after all this time you are very unlikely to get an email address with anything meaningful (john_smith@... for instance), unless you have a particularly unusual name.
