Does anyone have opinions about online backup software, eg Voxy, Carbonite, BT Vault etc. I'm interested in unlimited storage, not particularly a free option.
Thanks in advance of any help.

How much storage space are you looking for? I know you say 'unlimited' but that could mean you are looking at terabytes or even yottabytes. If you have that sort of storage requirements you will also need a special line laid into your premises to deal with the massive bandwidth that you'll be using and a company that have the necessary server space along with a full 'son, father, grandfather' off-site backup routine. All that will cost you several fairly useful body parts.

Sorry I wasn't specific enough, using the word "unlimited". What I meant was not 2Gigs as some free Backup facilities offer. I would like to Backup my complete system, but I don't really know how much that will be.

Although greysts correctly pointed out my naivety in asking for "unlimited" backup storage space, I've discovered that "Mozy" use precisely that word (unlimited) in their promotional material for their online backup.
I've not seen the "small print" to see exactly what that means, or to see if it includes the company paying for a "special line laid into my premises"!

So you are looking to back up your entire hard disk, yes? I would guess you've got a 80gb hard disk so that would be your maximum requirement although presumably the disk is nowhere near full yet.
If those numbers are about right then I wouldn't bother with on-line storage. You would far better off getting an external hard disk and backing up to that. The only bit then to consider is whether you want the ultimate security of having the backup in a different building should you be concerned about data recovery after a fire or theft. If that is a consideration then you WOULD need to think about on-line storage.

Yes, greysts, I would like to Backup everything. I had a bad experience when using a separate hard disc. The backup failed and completely crashed my system. I lost almost all my data. It was my fault but I thought an additional backup facility would increase my options to recover everything.
Thanks Again

I think you could count yourself as very unlucky if the external HD crashed as well. You could, of course, be equally unlucky with on-line storage. The company running the system goes bust and you've lost it all again. Perhaps if you REALLY want to make sure you need what I suggested in my previous note, both an external HD AND on-line.

I downloaded Carbonite and found it simple to set up and easy to use (if only the same could be said of all software!). Of course the proof of the pudding will be if I need to use it to restore data, but let's hope that never happens.
