Hi guys
Hope you can help me out. Whenever i try to play a folder from 'my music' i have to right click and then select 'play with windows media player'. I used to be able to double click the folder and wmp automatically plays it's contents. Whenever i do it now, the hour glass thing comes up for a second then disappears and nothing happens.
i'm running xp sp2 and wmp11.
Many thanks in advance Damo

I've never seen that as an option within Windows, how would it differentiate between image files and audio files?
Did you by any chance create any rules with the folders opening options?

i haven't created any rules with folder opening. Used to work fine. All of a sudden it stopped. Did virus checks, re-installing, etc.

I've just tried what you say you could do before and it doesn't work for me either.
Can I be clear on the process. I've opened Windows Explorer and in the left hand window of scanned down to a folder that I know contains music. All the double clicking in the world doesn't start up WMP. Is that what you mean?

Don't get me wrong, I don't think it supposed to work like that. I've certainly never seen it on any of the numerous PCs that have passed through my hands.

i'll tell you exactly what i do. Maybe it will make it a bit clearer (it's not a big deal really but i'm a**l like that).
my documents -> my music -> select a folder then click on 'play selection'...nothing happens. I then try double clicking the folder itself and nothing happens. What i have to do to get it to play is right click on the folder and click 'play with windows media player'. That's the only way i can get my audio files to play.
Can you help? what do you think greysts?

Hmm, I've just done what you said and it played the selection. All I can suggest is try reinstalling WMP11

I've tried re-installing on several occasions but still doesn't work. Strange.

dothomas , could it be that you don't have WMP set as the default player for these files.

It's that last bit - 'play selection' that I haven't got. Where do you get that from? I don't know if it makes any difference but I use Windows in Classic Mode rather than XP Mode.

I've set it as the default player for all audio files FifeFlyer.
'Play selection' has always been there greysts.
Done a virus check and all's good as well.
Any more ideas?

What about setting some other player as the default for all media (Real Player, Quick Time etc.), go through the setup and reboot then go back to WMP as the default.

This is gonna boggle you greysts. Did what you said by using real player as the default player and the same thing happens. I opened up my music -> albums -> (opened the albums folder, selected an album) -> Play slection (Found in the 'Music Tasks' menu on the left).
The same thing happened...cursor changed to hour glass for a split second, then nothing happened...even waited for a good three minutes just in case it was slow opening but nothing.
What you think?
And since i'm alreay bombarding you with questions on that, here's another one (again these aren't major but would be nice if it worked) I'm using realtek HD Audio ALC880 blah blah and there's an option to show the Sound Manager in the system tray. Works when i click it but when i re-boot it's not there. Did the whole start menu and task bar properties thing and clicked 'always show' but still the same.
Can you or anyone shed some light?

I think that I would either give up and not worry about it or do a complete re-install of Windows.

I'll try (not very pc savvy)
I'm using this Advanced system optimiser program and it messed around with the registry values which messed up some of the settings. Did a system restore but still didn't help so read the millions of entries in the ASO log file and fished out what i needed and went in and changed the values.
I'll hasten to add that i was doing this 'blind' and crossing my fingers hoping that pc wouldn't start smoking if i did something wrong!
I've sinced removed ASO and all's well.
Just to add that i've been stung by the 'ignorance bug' so will advise anyone who doesn't know much about the registry....leave it alone or get prof advice from here.
My only problem now is when pc slows right down don't know how to speed it up besides doing the usual stuff.
So once again thanks people.
P.S. my grandad who's a bit of a late bloomer with pcs thinks this forum is manna from heaven...great job guys!
