Traffic cams on your homepage
      #353295 - Fri Jun 15 2007 11:10 AM

I use "Netvibes" to personalise my own start page and found a very handy thing. It allows you to add a widget!
Now what makes this better is this.
Each week, I have to travel from the A2 through south london, then up through Blackwall tunnel and into London BUT never knew what traffic would be like.
I would often forget to check the traffic reports and usually got stuck in traffic.
Then I had an idea and did the following.

On my "Netvibes" start page tab , I clicked "add tab"
This basically gives you a while new page to add things too.
I simply clicked "External widget" (bottom of the add content menue on left).

On the new box that appears, click "Edit" and put THIS code in (copy and paste)-

<image src="CAMERA WEBSITE">
<name>cameraImage</name>
<width>362</width>
<height>272</height>
<hOffset>18</hOffset>
<vOffset>16</vOffset>
<opacity>255</opacity>
</image>

nothing will appear yet...

I opened in another tab, the Trafic for London (TFL) site on the London http://trafficalerts.tfl.gov.uk/pinpointlite/main.php and made sure only the "CCTV" camera option was ticked.
I then positioned the pointer over a relevant camera, when the image FROM that camera appeared, I RIGHT clicked on it then clicked properties and then highlight the URL address and then click on COPY.

NOW -

Go back to the new widget you added to start page. In the "Source" box where you put the html code, PASTE the URL you copied into the bit that says "Camera Website"

NB SIMPLY DELETE THE WORDS CAMERA WEBSITE THEN PASTE! SO YOU ARE PASTING INBETWEEN THE TWO " "

Then click "Add to my page"

You can repeat this as many times as you want using the same method.
You will end up with a page with various road/motorway views so you know what the roads look like/

I now have a tab on my start screen that has all the traffic cam views I need to SEE what the roads are like before I set off.
The above may look tek like but it really is a LOT simpler than it looks!

I like the concept but isn't it almost immediately out of date? I assume you spend an hour or so on the road so even if it looks OK when you set out what happens when there's an accident 5 minutes later somewhere on your route?

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

That could be said about any traffic report though Greysts.
You could hear on the radio that the roads are clear yet on route, 100 yards ahead, there is a crash.

But the idea of having this kind of thing on line is that you get virtually LIVE views and can at least plan your journey.
