I was eagerly awaiting Webuser's cover feature in this weeks issue, picked up a copy today, very interesting.
Where better to start than the Gold Award winner Media-Convert, copied and pasted a You Tube url - clicked 'convert'. Up pops a message "Downloading from You Tube no longer exists - Sorry!". Well there's a bit of tarnished Gold for starters.
Pleased vixi.net was featured although it was last on WebUser's list. Have used this for a while now although it does have it's moments. You Tube conversion works fine, have yet to experience any success converting a Google Video as Webuser suggests it's capable of. Always an error message, then again, vixy.net is a beta version so work in progress may improve on Google Video.
Have not bothered with the Silver and Bronze award winning sites, always another day, maybe.
Just thought it worth a mention.

Bit of a bummer.
I know lead times can affect a story (things changing between it being checked, written and arriving on the newsstand) but I guess when you're dealing with anything on the Internet it can change even quicker.

George,
Media-Convert's URL video conversion facility was definitely working as recently as last week, as it was tested by both the writer of the feature and myself several times. As TFC says, it is a particularly inconvenient bummer that things have changed since we went to press - the site has even removed the YouTube and Google Video instructions from its help pages, as if they were never there!
The Silver Award winner, Zamzar, is certainly still providing the service, so please don't be dissuaded from trying that, while Media-Convert has plenty of other free file conversions to offer. Though I'm as annoyed as you are at its removal of web video support, believe me. Here's Media-Convert's explanation.

Thanks for responding, I can understand you being annoyed with Media-Convert, especially after making this website the Gold winner.
TFC put it into perspective, so much can happen before reaching your readers, that I can appreciate.
I have not abandoned trying the others, just call it a definite maybe for another day.

So YouTube brought the heavies in and told Media-Convert they were about to lose some advertising revenue if they persisted with this option. I suppose that's what happens when you try to take on the big boys.
