do you have a pop up stopper, that might hamper some sites opening.

Bricat is correct, check the help with your popup stopper to see how it allows external links to open in new windows. Most should say hold down the CTRL key or similar as you click the links. Alternatively, you could use the Google toolbar for search and popup stopping, as this can tell the difference between a legitimate window launch and a scum popup.
