Bring your old XP IE Sp1 right up to date with this CD from Microsoft
      #351794 - Thu Jun 07 2007 02:52 AM

Did you know that Microsoft are now bundling Internet Explorer 7.0 and SP2 on the same CD? And are charging about £8-50 postage paid (varies due to exchange rates)...Many different country versions available(<---for our overseas viewers)
Meaning you can resume getting updates again. SP1 and IE6 have little or no support now

I am having a great deal of difficulty with your link. Try this one instead.

http://www.microsoft.com/windows/downloads/ie/getitnow.mspx

Surprisingly enough, when you go through the order process in Firefox the page display is all over the place. You'd a thought Microsoft would check that sort of thing, wouldn't you.

Really good tip that, thanks.

If I rebuilt my PC from scratch now, I can still get back up and running with my SP1 XP CD now plus that one

But you will still need about 100 Post-SP2 updates, which you can get from AutoPatcher here http://www.autopatcher.com/downloads/

What about Slipstreaming?

Slipstreaming combines a service pack with XP and is reliant on having the XP CD, which the majority of people don't have.

Those with the older XP CDs should slipstream SP2 and everyone should download the full Autopatcher every 6 months and put it on a CD, until SP3 arrives.

You'll find that the vast majority of OEM Recovery (System restore) disks have the i386 folder, which is the basis of the SP2 update. See this page for more info.

As this is the case, you should still be able to create a slipstreamed XP SP2, though you may find that your drivers won't be on the disk.

Alternatively, include all the hotfixes since SP2, following instructions here

Hello Iain

I know I keep plugging AutoPatcher in the forums but it really is the best way of getting and maintaining post-service pack updates.

For those who are unaware of it, it’s available for Win2000, XP, 2003 and Vista and includes a host of extras, like toolbars, flash, tweakui, registry tweaks and more. The May 2007 version is about 300MB so downloading it by torrent allows checkpointing for those with a poor line speed/allowance.

I have absolutely no objections to anything that helps ease the pain of windoze updates. but as you pointed out, 300b is a big chunk especially to those on dial up, as I am aware that there are a few unfortunate souls in that predicament.

My post was initially to make people aware that there is an alternative to sticking to the recovery disk option, which takes you back to the time when your PC left the factory, which may be many moons ago, followed by a few gigs worth of downloads to get back up to date
