when i had cable broadband installed the engineer said i would no longer need a download manager as it was much faster. think i was using star downloader. Would it be of any benifit if I had one using broadband? alot of people still reccomend them for mirrors etc & I have been having trouble downloading lately. could i use it to make downloads even faster? Or are these mainly for dailup users? then again i dont want to add more programmes just for the sake of it unless it would have an positive effect.
but apart from that it's not really required then i thought so & i dont remember ever scheduling downloads anyway. thanks for helping me not clog up with more unnecessary stuff.

I recommend using a downloader for security reasons. That is, I personally would never leave any internet connection unattended and at the mercy of the vermin out there. So using a downloader as you did before will give back your ability to stop then resume at any point, and yank the cord out the wall when you aren't around. Even always on comes with a free "OFF switch".

Despite all the hyped up claims, download managers DO NOT make downloads any faster. On any connection the download speed is governed by the band width you pay for. A dial up connection of 44kbs can only receive data at that speed. A file being downloaded is a certain finite size and it doesn't get any smaller just because a download manager chops it up into 4 separate bits before transmission. On a Broadband connection it is totally pointless to use a manager to try and increase the speed of transmission. IT WON'T WORK!!
On the separate issue of being able to continue the download after a break then, yes, they are a good idea for a dial up but again a bit pointless for BB. Perhaps if you regularly download files in excess of 50mb and your BB connection keeps breaking down then you might want to consider a manager. In that situation you should be chasing your ISP to give you what you're paying for - an 'always on' connection.
That was the original opinion I had too. Just thought I'd confirm it, you dont like missing out after all. Thanks for putting my mine at rest.
