Help Needed- My Download Site
      #34894 - Thu Jan 15 2004 09:22 PM

I am having trouble with my download site. I have recently moved all my downloads to my main site, but all my downloads are hosted by Yahoo Geocities. I have placed links to the files on my main site but they don't work, I get Page Unavailable Pages from Geocities. But if I go to the actual site where the files are hosted and download it works. I have no ideas left except to create 4 Download sites which I don't want to do because its harder work for me and inconvienient for people. Has anybody got any ideas?

Stop using Yahoo. If you read their Geocities terms it does say somewhere in there that you cannot link to any items at the site from an external page, which means graphics or download files. This is common practice among free sites like that, Angelfire (Terra-Lycos) are the same. You also need to take care they don't catch on and say you're using them as a storage site, if they do that you will lose everything there, probably including your account.

Thanks for that. I only used them because its supposedly a GREAT feature that comes with BT Yahoo Broadband. Better get my downloads off there. Can you recommend a good host with about 3 or 4 gb of bandwith a month. I'll need some funds of course and I'm going to "Appeal" for help on my site. I only want to spend about £40-£50 a year.

How much space do you need? I use 34sp.com, and have 75 MB space plus 3 gig a month bandwidth allowance. It has all the fancy features included, and you can ask your current domain name hosts to simply redirect the DNS pointers to the 34sp servers, which they should do at no cost.

The package I get costs £35 a year, and if you go over on the traffic they will simply take it off the following month's allowance. If that becomes a regular thing, they will tell you, and you can opt to buy more bandwidth at any time. They also have a forum there for thier own users, and the admin is friendly and helpful. Their servers are based in London too, which is good for British visitors, and have uptime of over 98%.

I didn't know that about Geocities!! If someone wanted to change their site from Yahoo Geocities to another server, would that mean you have to do your whole website all over again or do they just 'transfer it over' to the new one (I'm aware I may sound a little naive here, but I'm old, bear with me!)
You have to laugh or else go slightly insane. http://www.geocities.com/whatawaytoearnaliving/

Well it depends. If you used the Geocities Online Site Builder, you would have to rebuild the site or copy the website to your computer then upload it again. TFC has an offline browser for doing this, I don't know the address. If you used a program such as Dreamweaver, NOF, Go Live!, Webplus, etc you will be able to upload the new files.

Owen is correct. Geocities Sitebuilder inserts Yahoo specific code and uses Yahoo resources for some of the features, so they won't work outside their environment without modifying them. Also, pay for sites such as 34sp often won't offer Sitebuilder style features, or EZ Upload, you build on your own then use FTP to upload the pages. Once you move in that direction, it's time to stop depending on online tools, and learn the skills needed by a webmaster, which isn't such a bad thing really.

To be honest, I think anyone who depends on tools like Sitebuilder is being very short sighted. What if they lose the site? What if they "break the rules" and lose the account? What if they want to transfer? There is no way of backing up a site created in this way, and expecting it to work elsewhere.

For this reason I kept my own site at Geocities simple, and wrote the HTML by hand using notepad so it can be used anywhere, which is the only way I have ever created web sites. Only tools I use are TopStyle for the style sheets, and graphics software as all site logos I use anywhere are my own creation.I feel more satisfaction knowing I learned then applied the skill itself, than I ever would by simply clicking a few buttons in some program. :)

Controller, I hope that isn't the program I know from previous years called "Web Copier"? If it is, then it contains spyware.

Hi safeTsurfa,

I don't think so (though one can never say never [wink).

I've been using it for some years now without any signs of spyware. I seem to remember trying Web Copier some time ago, which I dumped for the very reason you mention.

I am considering opening an account at 34SP but why is your package so expensive? The one I've seen is £15. All I need is a basic account with a subdomain, quite a bit of bandwith and about 50MB of webspace. I don't really need any email accounts or CGI's, etc because I have 100 POP3 and 500 Forwarding with my current account and some CGI's.

£15 buys 30 MB, use their features list to see how the packages are structured. You will see that my £35 buys 75 MB with 3 GB a month traffic. So for you, 50 MB would cost £25 a year and provide 2 GB traffic a month, being the basic £15 plus another £10 for the extra 20 MB and 1 GB traffic.

They don't do subdomains within domains, please see their own forum which discusses this, under Website Support > Sticky topic "Subdomains/Domain pointers". Please do use their own forum for technical discussion on what they can offer, and what you need, it is there for that purpose and the owners themselves do answer questions. It also allows their users to show off their own sites, so you can get an idea of their server performance before making a decision.

Thanks for your help, now its time to put a donate button on my site and save up a little cash myself. I'm taking the £35 option, that will be sufficient. When I said subdomain I meant isecurity.34sp.com because they do it for free. I don't know how they do it so cheap because I'm currently paying £5.00 a month which is £60 a year and this is what I get with it. Not really to bad because they provide me with all the programs I need and lots more.
