Kodak DX4330
      #34844 - Thu Jan 15 2004 05:05 PM

I have a problem installing my Kodak Easyshare and associated softwear with my DX4330 digital camera. I find the Kodak softwear poor and would welcome any advice about any installation for my digital camera.
My camera came with a Kodak camera dock - do I have to use this with Kodak or can I choose another system to use to download my photos?

The Kodak camera dock makes life that much easier because it acts as a battery charger for the camera (assuming you have rechargable batteries) and it has a permanent USB connection to your PC. Press the button on the front and the connection springs to life. If you don't wish to use the dock then a simple USB cable can be used to connect to your PC. You will need the special cable with a smaller conection at one end to fit into the camera.

You don't have to use the Kodak Easyshare software. Once the USB connection is made the camera becomes just another drive on your PC. For example on my PC it is H: Using Windows Explorer you can browse the camera. I have a DX3700 and that has 2 directories, Internal Memory and Picture Card. Depending on where I saved the pictures I can use any photo editing software to manipulate the images as the camera holds them as JPEG's.

Hope this helps.

Thanx for the reply Greysts - I have the Kodak camera, the Kodak easyshare camera dock but the do not want to use the Kodak softwear to download my pics from the camera.
I have Windows XP which has Microsoft Picture it' 7 and would prefer to use that - or any better site if advised.
I have attached the USB connection from the camera dock and plugged the camera dock in, but it does not register to download the pics from the camera onto Microsoft Picture it' 7.
As you can gather I am 'not clue'd up' on computers!
Hoping you can help
Mikeyp

If you look at this page you will notice that you need to install the Kodak Easyshare software first before connecting the dock. Once installed, switch off your PC put your camera in the dock and make sure the camera is switched on and the dock is powered up. Plug the USB cable into the dock and your PC (not into a USB hub). Switch on the PC and when it's finished the boot process press the button on the front of the dock. If everything's OK you should here a ding to indicate that the PC has recognised the Camera dock. Then go into Windows Explorer and look for a new drive letter with your camera name against it. Follow the directory down until you see some jpg files. You can then open them with any software you choose.

As a new digital camera user myself, that all seems to make sense, but before editing, drag and drop the photos to a convenient folder on your HD. I call mine "Camera", hardly very imaginative, but it suits me, and then I use subfolders that provide a bit more information.

Once you've got the images safely onto your PC you can delete them from the camera, releasing the memory for re-use.

I'm having problems reinstalling the drivers for my Canon Camera to Canon Zoombrowser ever since I changed to Win XP. You mentioned not connecting a camera via a USB hub but direct into PC. Could this be same problem for me? I've been trying via my USB2.0 hub. Whenever I have tried to install the camera, it does not appear in Device Manager. When it does it says to install driver. Whenever I try that either from the original CD (which does not have an XP driver on it) or by download from web, Windows doesn't recognise the camera. I can use Paint Shop Photo Album to download from the camera but not ZoomBrowser EX (supplied with camera) which is infuriating because all my pre XP photos are stored in ZoomBrowser.

As far as I know there are no hard and fast rules about what equipment needs a powered USB port i.e one that is either integral to the PC or has a separate power supply. I tried to install my Kodak digital camera into an unpowered hub and it didn't like it. What I can say is that if you can swap things around your camera does not need a USB2.0 port. The data flow between camera and PC is minimal so a USB1.0 is perfectly adequate. All I can suggest is to try moving the cable from your camera to a different port and see what happens.

I've had a scan through the Canon web site looking for FAQ's and came across something that might help. First of all the drivers for XP use WIA and all the others use TWAIN. (I was always told that stood for Things Without An Interesting Name, but who knows.) If you have installed the earlier version of the drivers off the CD it may well be that these are conflicting with the later XP version. I would uninstall all the drivers and the Zoombrowser and get the latest software from the Canon site. Reboot after the uninstall and then re-install the latest drivers. Switch off the PC, connect the camera direct to the PC and wait with bated breath for the 'New Hardware Found' screen. Then reply to this post saying what a damned fine chap I am, or not as the case may be.

Been there, done that but I'll try it all again! I downloaded the WIA driver from the Canon Australia site. For some reason the one from the UK site wouldn't download. It came up with the New Hardware etc wizard but when I connected the camera it wouldn't connect to Zoombrowser and the camera wasn't listed in My Computer. Yet I can still get to it if I go to Photo Album and Acquire Images from there! I've tried using my son-in-law's Canon CD (he has similar camera) in case mine had become corrupted but still no joy. I'll try uninstalling everything and trying again but this time I won't install the "old" drivers from the CD. I'll go for just the downloaded WIA driver as you suggest.
Fingers crossed!
