Hair tearing out time here ! Last night Windows told me that it had had to close down and restart because of a fault that had occurred, for which there was apparently no known cause. This morning, when I started the computer, all I could get on Firefox was the start-up page. All my bookmarks have disappeared, both on the toolbar and the dropdown. IE6 works fine, as does everything other than firefox. The only thing that has been altered on my computer set-up is that I installed a laser mouse, which was problem free. I have tried a restore point prior to the event, with the same result, firefox start-up page appears as before. Any help, (in simple terms please!!) would be appreciated.

Latest development : After much fiddling around, can now use Firefox as normal, only fault is the missing bookmarks. Have now started "repopulating" the list. Had another reoccurrance of the Windows stop error, apparently a device driver caused the windows operating system to stop unexpectedly, cause unknown, but this time my partially repopulated bookmarks didn`t disappear. Looking around the forums, it would seem that bookmarks going missing happens quite a lot. There is a back-up, I know, but I haven`t found it!

chevin , bookmarks are in a hidden folder. Click on start > control panel > folder options > click the view tab and scroll down to "hidden files and folders" and place a tick in the box beside "show hidden files and folders" > apply > OK.
Now try this , click on start > my computer > local disc ( c ) > documents and settings > chevin( your folder ) > application data > mozila > firefox > profiles > and in the next folder you should find another with your bookmarks in it.
If they are where they should be , you should now be able to import them into firefox.

Many thanks for your help, FifeFlyer. Did as you suggested, and found the missing bookmarks.I copied them, and to cut a long story short, they are now residing in the bookmarks toolbar. Perhaps not where they should be, but that`s fine by me!

Pleased you're sorted. Something cropped up and i had to rush off while i was writing my last post so didn't finish what i had to say. So if you lose the bookmarks again then one of the simplest ways to get them back is.....copy the bookmarks folder to your desktop then open Firefox , click on bookmarks > organize bookmarks > file > import > tick the "from a file" box > next > from the drop down list in the "look in" box choose ?"desktop" > double click on the bookmarks folder. P.S. Some system important files are hidden to prevent accidental deletion so remember to reverse the folder options you changed earlier.
