Welcome to WebUser, gannymoo.

The fact that it only gets to the BIOS post stage is a little concerning. What happens when you DO press the Del key? Does the PC show the BIOS screen?

Hmmm, the fact that you are running ME on it suggests that the PC is not so young, would I be right?

There is that unfortunate possibility that the hard drive may have reached the end of its serviceable life.

Do you know who made the hard drive?

If so, I may be able to point you in the direction of a hard drive diagnostic program. The only problem here is that the manufacturers only write the programs with their own hardware in mind, so knowing the manufacturer is imperative.

Thanks again for trying to help my son seems to think that maybe his dear children have messed about and put it into sleep mode (whatever that is) but still i was thinking may be it is time for a new one , but as i am quite old may be i will never be able to sort things out , i think may be i belong back in the days where all you had was a radio to worry about. Then again as the saying goes its never to late to learn thanks

If it was just in sleep mode, then it would eventually boot past and go into BIOS on the pressing of the DEL key, and would also boot to windows, methinks the problem may well be a bit more serious
