I am having an intermittent problem with IE 6 . First, I have a toshiba M50-MX5, almost 2 years old. XPsp2.
App name. Iexplore.exe App ver: 6.0.2900.2180 Model name: comctl32.dll Mod ver: 5.82.2900.2982 Offset:00014784
I have had my notebook checked by software techs. One at my work place and another shop. It is clean of malware. My security is NAV,Trojan Hunter, spyware blaster, spybot, adaware, a2 personal,D-Link Modem DSL-3006, SMC Barricade Router, Alpha Shield and I have never had a virus nor malware with my 3 year old satellite toshiba 2410 nor this present model.
However, I am now getting itermittent errors with my IE 6, that says that the IE6 has encountered a problem and is closing. The tech info, as indicated is "comctl32.dll", I have googled it and checked via Search and the .dll is on my notebook.
I tried this fix: web page
I get to the second last sentence "Right Click the ie.inf file and click Install on the context menu" and I can't get any further. The error I get is that "Iexplore.exe", file cannot be found. Please verify that the correct file name was given."
I am not a techie and don't understand this, I am not sure of myself enough to attempt to uninstall and reinstall as I don't know the steps involved.
As I mentioned, this is intermittent. So I thought that it maybe a corrupt file.
Since this is a toshiba notebook all of the programs come bundled together which is a big pain.
I was just wondering if some member has any ideas about what I should do, thankyou.
(What worries me about the IE6 uninstall and reinstall are the patches etc. as this is xpsp2 on my notebook and as I said earlier, I am not a techie>) Thankyou for your time.

Have you tried installing IE7?

Do you know that we're all in line for succession to the throne? Really?
Well, if forty-eight million, two hundred thousand, seven hundred and one people died I'd be Queen.

Thx for the reply. No I haven't tried to install IE7 as management wants us to wait a bit, thus I am trying to figure out my dilemma here.

From that comment can I assume that this is a works computer?

No this is my own computer that I purchased for work and am required to maintain and use the security programs/hardware that are paid for by management and used at work and home. For example I use the notebook to backup my mini dvd camcorder onto dvd and also convert my vhs tapes into dvd format via my Hauppauge PVR usb 2; so the computer is mine and I use it for work as well. I thought that I posted this, however I don't see my post in the thread and hope it is not a repeat. Thankyou

I'm sorry but you clearly do not have complete control of this PC. If your employers are dictating to you what you can and can't do with it then it isn't a personal PC. I would suggest you take it to them and ask their advice on what you need to do to fix it. I will close this thread.
