How to stop images being copied?
      #346204 - Fri May 04 2007 11:07 AM

Hi All,

I'm involved in my local camera club and they have just had a web site created by the local high school kids. But there is a problem that they don't know how to solve and I'm hoping someone one on here can help, as I'm stuck.

There is a gallery on the web site and they say they have reduced the image sizes to 75 pixels, so if anyone tries to copy them and print them, they would turn out small.

I was given permission by photographer to try to download her photos from the web site and see what I could get. I had no problems downloading her photos, increased resolution in Adobe Photoshop and printed the photos out on A4 sheets, which were very clear.

Please can anyone tell me how to stop images being download or copied from a web site? It is all been done in HTML. I can then let the kids know what to do.

Cheers

I suspect the images haven't been reduced themselves (i.e. the image file) but have been 'resized' via the HTML image attribute/code. This means the image file is at a higher resolution than the thumbnail would suggest.

Other than making the image so small, or of such poor resolution, as to be useless as an effective means to 'show it off' online there is no way of preventing images from being taken. Aside from the 'Save picture as...' function, any image that appears in a browser window is available from the cache on the hard drive.

I'd guess the best you can do is print "Camera Club" in big letters across the middle of them before uploading, so at least they'd be no use to anybody.
But of course it would spoil the effect for people looking at them on the website too.

Nerval is right. Mark them as copyright with a logo or icon added. There is absolutely no way of stopping anyone copying pics. No matter what you do to stop them being downloaded, you can't prevent a screen copy.

Hi Whizwrinkly,

Just had a thought about how to stop photos being copied. Is it possible to store the photos in a secured folder (https://), so no one can get to the directory where the photos are stored? But would you still be able to view them on the web site? At the minute the right click has been disabled so the photos can't be downloaded, but as I know how to design a basic web site I am able to download the photos by using the web address route.

Cheers

If they can see it, they can get it. The nanosecond an image appears on the screen it is already on their hard drive, in the Internet Cache!!!

Disabled right-click, blind GIF overlays cannot prevent an image being 'taken', they just make it less easy to do so for the casual surfer. Only not putting it online can do protect an image from a thief hell bent on having them.

Yes, you could use a secure directory with access only to the chosen/trusted, but as it's a club site why bother, just show the images at the club meets.

Of course, you could ruin the images with watermarks and copyright notices, but as a photographer surely you've put the image on show to be seen, not dismissed as a mess because of the writing over the image.

Bottom line is; are the images 'commercially viable', in other words, are people likely to knick 'em and sell 'em for profit? If the answer is yes, 'they really are that amazing' then I'd say protect them as you would any valuable commodity, and that means not putting it online, or at least not in a format that is usable.

There are literally millions of photography websites with personal galleries, etc. Perhaps you need to look what they have done with their images to 'protect' them (all, and none of the above) and then decide what the best option is for you.

Alternatively, you might like to visit the AP forum and ask the many members there who have their own, and club galleries online if they are concerned about this issue, and if so how they deal with it.
