Boot problem
      #346085 - Thu May 03 2007 11:57 AM

I’ve got a Dell Dimension 2400 P4 3.06ghz with 1.25 gig of Ram with a Nvida Gex force graphics card and a sound blaster 5.1 card all relevant windows updates are installed and the machine has been running lovely for a long time.
I’m running XP home edition the problem is when the computer is booting it reaches the login screen and when you go to click on the pic to login nothing happens you can still move the mouse.
I can boot the pc using the last known configuration by pressing F8 and also it will boot into safe mode as well just a cold boot it won’t : (
I’ve run the Dell diagnostic check and everything is fine according to that, also their lights on the back say everything is fine…..also virus and spyware scan are clean (Avast and ad-aware plus also spybot)
I’ve done a couple of system restores before the problem started but still no good.
There’s a boot log of a failed boot below any help much appreciated
I’ve been Googling like mad but not found an answer.
Thanks.

If you cannot sort it and have a XP CD try this - http://www.michaelstevenstech.com/XPrepairinstall.htm

Quote:

A Repair Install will replace the system files with the files on the XP CD used for the Repair Install. It will leave your applications and settings intact, but Windows updates will need to be reapplied.

Hi Max,
Cheers for the reply.
I've got a Dell repair disc that came with the pc which I was hoping no to have to use..but it's beginning to look like that's the way I'll have to go : (
I've normally been able to solve problems before with a bit of Googling but this one seems a bit rarer, as I can't find an answer that fits most of the symptoms let alone all of them...
I'm hoping a far clever person than me knows what it is so I don't have to go down the repair route.
Thanks again.
Regards,
Notajedi

I've posted on a couple of forum's and no one's come up with anything as yet so it's not an easy problem for sure, it seems a bit of a weird one that I can boot using last good config but next time I can't : (
Restart is a no go as well btw....

I think i would save time back up and use the repair disk at least you then know its sorted,if you manage to repair it somehow you would be gutted if it started acting up again in a few days.

Next time you boot from 'Last .......' go to Start, All Programs, Accessories, System Tools, System Restore. Select 'Restore Computer...', look at the calendar and make a note of the date/time of the last restore point. Don't restore the computer at this time, just exit.

1. Have a look in Event Viewer (All Progs, Admin Tools) and follow through any errors (in red) that are showing between the last restore point (above) and now.

2. Also, have you changed anything since the restore date/time above.

Thanks for replying Burr, I've had these problems for about a week now btw.
in reply to your questions.
Today at 1pm is my last restore point
1 Only recent event in the event viewer is a redbook driver failure and that looking at the time is after a cold boot try, in my boot log for a failed boot redbook is the last driver that fails to load.
2 just updated Java and also installed spyware doctor from the Google pack last known bit of software that was installed before the problem started was av mixmaster I belive it's called installed by my son on his account, last restore I did went before that was on the pc and I've just checked it isn't on the add/remove list of programmes.

Notajedi

Hmm, audio/music player/mp3, my least favourite subjects. It does sound (excuse the pun) as though it's something to do with the audio or the jukebox.

Have a look in the msconfig StartUp Tab for anything to do with audio or the jukebox and untick it/them and let it reboot.

If the PC still doesn't boot properly:
1. Go into Device Manager and uninstall the sound card. Don't let XP reinstall it until you can boot normally.

2. Uninstall the jukebox via it's own uninstall in All Programs.

What didn't work?

1. Was there anything in the msconfig StartUp Tab?
2. Did you uninstall the sound card?

As I said earlier, remove the program via its own uninstall in Start, All Programs. It may only be on your son's account.

Google points me to this site but the name is different http://www.wmplugins.com/ItemDetail.aspx?ItemID=671

I had a similar problem. I also had "Loaded driver \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\aswMon2.SYS" as the last line of a logged boot. I checked that file and it's part of Avast Antivirus.

It only seems to exist in the \SystemRoot\System32\Drivers\ directory temporarily (perhaps just after a software update requiring a reboot).

I renamed the file so that the system couldn't load it, and this time the system booted, albeit with the anti-virus not working.

I went into Control Panel Add/Remove Programs, and selected the Update Components option. This downloaded something. I then rebooted and the system came up fully and this time the Anti-Virus was working as well.

Cheers for the help Burr and Steve going to go for the repair install option now though, had a bit of help on other forums as well but haven't been able to cure it unfortunately.
Thanks again.

Notajedi.
